{"id":398302,"date":"2026-03-22T14:52:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-22T14:52:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/398302\/"},"modified":"2026-03-22T14:52:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-22T14:52:11","slug":"proctor-shaw-creates-powerfully-tranquil-stone-brick-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/398302\/","title":{"rendered":"Proctor &#038; Shaw creates &#8220;powerfully tranquil&#8221; Stone Brick House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Local studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/proctor-shaw\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Proctor &amp; Shaw<\/a> looked to Mallorcan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/villas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">villas<\/a> to create a feeling of calmness at Stone Brick House, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/london-houses\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London home<\/a> extended with walls of pale limestone brick.<\/p>\n<p>The terraced house was updated for a young family in Clapham and expanded with a new kitchen and dining space overlooking the garden.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/proctorandshaw.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Proctor &amp; Shaw<\/a> founder John Proctor, &#8220;airy Mallorcan villas&#8221; were a key influence on the design, informing its pale, natural material palette, which revolves around the use of low-carbon limestone bricks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2307491 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/stone-brick-house-proctor-shaw-architecture-residential-london-england-uk_dezeen_2364_col_18-852x852.jpeg\" alt=\"Stone Brick House by Proctor &amp; Shaw\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Proctor &amp; Shaw has extended a house in London<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Can Lis house in Mallorca by Danish architect J\u00f8rn Utzon became a key precedent, and we sought to achieve a similar purity with material restraint and craft using muted natural clay plaster tones, oak and limestone brick,&#8221; he told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The stone brick was pivotal. It honestly expresses the construction, gifts a light reflective tone to the space and importantly provides high levels of thermal mass that assist the environmental temperance,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But perhaps most importantly, it is an ultra-low carbon construction product using about 93 per cent less embodied carbon than fired clay bricks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2307477 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/stone-brick-house-proctor-shaw-architecture-residential-london-england-uk_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x852..jpeg\" alt=\"Limestone brick-lined extension\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>It is lined with exposed limestone bricks<\/p>\n<p>Sinking the floor level of Stone Brick House&#8217;s extension enabled a generous 2.9-metre ceiling height, which creates a feeling of spaciousness in tandem with a full-height sliding door into the garden and a large skylight above the dining table framed by thin oak beams.<\/p>\n<p>The steps down into the extension are framed by bespoke oak storage containing a pantry. This wraps around the corner to become a backdrop to the kitchen, a long counter and a wooden island.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2307475 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/stone-brick-house-proctor-shaw-architecture-residential-london-england-uk_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x1065.jpeg\" alt=\"Stone Brick House by Proctor &amp; Shaw\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The goal was for the home to feel\u00a0&#8220;powerfully tranquil&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Opposite, a custom dining table sits alongside a built-in bench against a brick wall. The bench extends to become a window seat overlooking a planted bed in the garden.<\/p>\n<p>Complementing the expanses of limestone brick are walls of natural plaster and a terracotta tiled floor underfoot, which extends out to become the garden patio.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2307486 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/stone-brick-house-proctor-shaw-architecture-residential-london-england-uk_dezeen_2364_col_13-852x106.jpeg\" alt=\"Brick-lined dining room\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Skylights illuminate the dining table<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Providing space for entertaining was a key brief requirement, so the dining table, associated seating, kitchen counter and kitchen island are all generous,&#8221; Proctor said.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/12\/01\/stone-steel-house-dgn-studio-sarah-izod\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/stone-steel-house-dgn_dezeen_2364_sq_1-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Stone and Steel House extension by DGN Studio and Sarah Izod\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> DGN Studio uses sandstone bricks in north London home extension\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All the elements come together here; volumetric generosity, high levels of natural light, and serene material authenticity create a powerfully tranquil space,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Of particular note is the custom kitchen island with expressed simple timber frame construction and open shelves and drawers creating an airy, joyful central piece of furniture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2307483 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/stone-brick-house-proctor-shaw-architecture-residential-london-england-uk_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x852.jpeg\" alt=\"Stone Brick House by Proctor &amp; Shaw\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The existing front room and hallway have been opened up<\/p>\n<p>In the existing home, the front room and hallway have been opened up through the introduction of sliding wooden doors, allowing light and views along the entire depth of its plan.<\/p>\n<p>Other London extensions completed by Proctor &amp; Shaw include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/03\/18\/proctor-shaw-hope-villa-extension-london\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one in Peckham, which is topped by a tiered allotment,<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/06\/24\/proctor-shaw-heath-house-london\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">another in north London designed as a timber-framed &#8220;sanctuary for wellbeing&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Local studio Proctor &amp;
