Heck, it\u2019s even in your mac and cheese.<\/p>\n<p>Most Americans were <a href=\"https:\/\/hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/protein-is-important-but-were-eating-too-much-experts-say\/#:~:text=According%20to%20experts%2C%20people%20are%20likely%20eating,is%20about%2020%25%20more%20than%20is%20recommended.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:already getting more than enough protein;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">already getting more than enough protein<\/a> in their daily diet before the craze, according to experts. It just may not all be the best kind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile meat provides high-quality protein, some meats also provide unhealthy amounts of saturated fats and sodium,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/diet-and-nutrition\/high-protein-foods-the-best-protein-sources-to-include-in-a-healthy-diet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Harvard Health says;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Harvard Health says<\/a>. \u201cIf you eat meat, it&#8217;s important to choose leaner meats and poultry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Protein has garnered new interest as political figures push Americans to eat more. Peanuts, which are technically a legume, have more than 37 grams of protein per cup, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/encyclopedia\/content?contenttypeid=76&amp;contentid=16087-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Rochester Medicine;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Rochester Medicine<\/a> says, as well as more than 12 grams of fiber.<\/p>\n<p>A cup of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/encyclopedia\/content?contenttypeid=76&amp;contentid=12061-4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:almonds;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">almonds<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/encyclopedia\/content?contenttypeid=76&amp;contentid=12151-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:pistachios;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">pistachios<\/a> have around 30 and 25 grams of protein per cup, respectively, and pistachios have the same amount of fiber as peanuts.<\/p>\n<p>A cup of cooked soybeans, the beans with the highest amount of protein, have 28.62 grams of protein and 10.32 grams of fiber, according to Rochester Medicine. A cup of cooked lentils has 17.86 grams of protein and 15.64 grams of fiber.<\/p>\n<p>These fiber-rich protein sources also contain vitamins, essential minerals and compounds that regulate blood sugar and lower cholesterol.<\/p>\n<p>The key is not necessarily cutting out meat altogether, but making small swaps to your meals, Johns Hopkins says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVegetables, beans, peas, lentils, and soy are not only cheaper, but also better for health,\u201d Johns Hopkins nutritional epidemiologist Andrew Thorne-Lyman said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Protein seems to be everywhere these days for Americans.
