artificial intelligence<\/a> to speed up fibre \u200cbroadband construction and cut emissions from one of Britain’s largest \u200bcommercial vehicle fleets, the BT-owned network operator said on Wednesday.<\/p>\nOpenreach, which runs the country’s biggest broadband network, said the partnership, first reported by Reuters, uses Alphabet-owned \u200cGoogle’s data tools \u2060to analyse routes, idling and fault patterns across its 24,000-van fleet, which covers almost \u2060200 million miles (322 million km) a year.<\/p>\n
“By applying Google Cloud’s technologies to real operational challenges, we’re seeing \u200bpractical, \u200bmeasurable benefits,” James Tappenden, \u200ba managing director at \u200cOpenreach, said.<\/p>\n
The company said the system was already reducing unnecessary travel, cutting fuel use and supporting a faster shift to electric vehicles – a move it said that had removed around 10,000 tonnes of CO2 \u200cequivalent annually.<\/p>\n
The network builder said \u200bit was also using Google’s \u200bAI models to \u200bmap 35 million homes and national \u200ctransport corridors, allowing planners to \u200bidentify where \u200bfull-fibre lines can be installed more quickly.<\/p>\n
Openreach is investing 15 billion pounds ($20.1 billion) to roll out \u200bits fibre \u200cnetwork to 25 million premises by the \u200bend of 2026.<\/p>\n
