{"id":403206,"date":"2026-03-25T14:30:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T14:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/403206\/"},"modified":"2026-03-25T14:30:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T14:30:10","slug":"esri-warns-inflation-will-rise-to-3-2-while-criticising-government-measures-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/403206\/","title":{"rendered":"ESRI warns inflation will rise to 3.2% while criticising Government measures \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) has warned that rising energy costs linked to the Iran crisis will push inflation to 3.2 per cent this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It also criticised Government moves to cut excise duty on fuel as poorly targeted and likely to disproportionately benefit higher-income households.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In its latest quarterly bulletin, the think tank predicts headline inflation in the Irish economy will average 3.2 per cent this year, up from a previous forecast of 2.1 per cent, and remained elevated at 2.7 per cent next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A more prolonged conflict in the Middle East with an extended spike in energy prices, however, could see \u201cprice rises across a wide range of goods and services\u201d while dampening of economic activity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Even if the conflict ends soon, there will be a lasting impact on prices here, it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cProlonged disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz would put considerable upward pressure on oil and gas prices, and raise uncertainty,\u201d the ESRI said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis is likely to weigh on economic activity through investment and consumption channels,\u201d it said, noting the scale of the impact was dependent on the magnitude and duration of the energy price shocks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/03\/15\/are-we-on-the-brink-of-another-destructive-price-surge\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Are we on the brink of another destructive price surge?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">To shield consumers from the current price shock, the Government this week announced cuts to excise duty on fuel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The ESRI, however, criticised the measures, saying they were untargeted and represented a \u201csubsidy to higher income households\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>The difficult choices that could dramatically increase housing supply in Dublin<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">About 50 per cent of the cost of cutting indirect taxes on energy would go to the top 40 per cent of households, Prof Alan Barrett said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">If the Government had designed a policy to give 50 per cent of the Apple tax windfall to the top 40 per cent of households it would be viewed as \u201cstrange\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf you start having policies that direct money towards higher-income people, it reduces your capacity to insulate those at the bottom,\u201d Barrett said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Despite the geopolitical uncertainty, the ESRI said it expected the Irish economy to continue to grow in 2026 and 2027, albeit at a slower pace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It forecast the domestic economy would grow in terms of modified domestic demand (MDD) by 2.1 per cent this year and by 2.8 per cent in 2027 with household spending boosted by a strong labour market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It warned its forecasts would be reviewed \u201cin the light of the ongoing Iran crisis\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It said housing output remains a core concern of Government policy while noting annual completions need to be approaching 50,000 units if national targets are to be met. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While new dwelling completions rose to over 36,000 last year, the institute said that based on the forward indicators such as commencements and planning permissions, \u201cit is difficult to see further upward momentum in housing output\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cFor now, we expect housing output to remain in the mid-30,000s in 2026 and 2027,\u201d it said.
