{"id":403235,"date":"2026-03-25T14:51:15","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T14:51:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/403235\/"},"modified":"2026-03-25T14:51:15","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T14:51:15","slug":"snohetta-renovates-theatre-nanterre-amandiers-in-france","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/403235\/","title":{"rendered":"Sn\u00f8hetta renovates Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Nanterre-Amandiers in France"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/snohetta\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sn\u00f8hetta<\/a> has completed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/renovations\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">renovation<\/a> of Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Nanterre-Amandiers in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/france\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">France<\/a>, unifying its performance spaces around a tilted glass hall that overlooks a landscaped plaza.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/theatres\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">theatre<\/a> in the Paris suburb of Nanterre dates back to the 1965 Festival de Nanterre, when it began life as a circus tent and subsequently a temporary warehouse. The permanent building was designed in 1976 by the architect Jacques Kalisz.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2309141 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/snohetta-theatre-nanterre-amandiers-renovation-france_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Renovation of the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Nanterre-Amandiers in France\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Sn\u00f8hetta has renovated Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Nanterre-Amandiers in France<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.snohetta.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sn\u00f8hetta<\/a> won a competition to update Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Nanterre-Amandiers in 2018, thanks to its proposal to upgrade its existing venues, add a new 200-seat auditorium and reconfigure its public spaces with a focus on flexibility and natural light.<\/p>\n<p>At the centre of the renovation is The Grand Hall, a fully-glazed, multipurpose space that overlooks a newly-created sunken courtyard and planting designed in collaboration with landscape studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silva-landscaping.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atelier Silva Landscaping<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2309159 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/snohetta-theatre-nanterre-amandiers-renovation-france_dezeen_2364_col_17-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior view of glass structure by Sn\u00f8hetta\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Its tilted glass exterior overlooks a newly landscaped plaza<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The rehabilitation project is neither a rupture nor a spectacular gesture, but a careful transformation aimed at preserving the essence of the place while firmly situating it in the present day,&#8221; said Sn\u00f8hetta.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The intervention responds to the evolution of artistic practices, uses, and audience expectations, while renewing the dialogue between the theatre, the city, and the park,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The themes of materiality and transparency run throughout the project, serving a building that is clear, legible, and strongly connected to its context.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2309154 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/snohetta-theatre-nanterre-amandiers-renovation-france_dezeen_2364_col_12-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Renovated performance space by Sn\u00f8hetta\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The renovation centres around the fully-glazed hall<\/p>\n<p>The Grand Hall maintains the footprint of the theatre&#8217;s previous foyer, expanded with a new roof and sunken floor that allows access from both the upper forecourt and lower stepped plaza.<\/p>\n<p>A mezzanine area above the hall&#8217;s flexible double-height spaces provides additional access into the auditoria, while a ceiling with integrated stage equipment enables the entire space to be transformed into an additional performance or meeting venue.<\/p>\n<p>Sn\u00f8hetta used a &#8220;deliberately restrained&#8221; palette of concrete, wood and glass for these public areas, with the intention of creating warm, robust spaces and surfaces that would reflect the changing light through the fully-glazed walls.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/03\/13\/glasshouse-theatre-snohetta-blight-rayner\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1774450274_797_glasshouse-theatre-queensland-snohetta-blight-rayner-architecture-cultural-australia_dezeen_2364_sq-.jpeg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Glasshouse Theatre by Blight Rayner Architecture and Sn\u00f8hetta\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Glasshouse Theatre in Queensland operates &#8220;like a finely tuned musical instrument&#8221;\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Transparency, omnipresent throughout the space, changes the perception of the building throughout the day and seasons, making the theatre\u2019s energy visible and supporting its mission of artistic transmission and dissemination,&#8221; said the studio.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By day, natural light animates the volumes and reveals the raw materials; by night, the hall is illuminated, transforming the theatre into an urban lantern,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2309146 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/snohetta-theatre-nanterre-amandiers-renovation-france_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Inteiror view of the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Nanterre-Amandiers by Sn\u00f8hetta\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Concrete, wood and glass define the public areas<\/p>\n<p>Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Nanterre-Amandiers&#8217;s main 800-seat auditorium has been entirely overhauled, with the creation of accessible entrances, technical upgrades and improved sightlines.
