{"id":404367,"date":"2026-03-26T05:03:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T05:03:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/404367\/"},"modified":"2026-03-26T05:03:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T05:03:12","slug":"violent-individual-imprisoned-for-breaking-pregnant-partners-jaw-in-limerick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/404367\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Violent individual&#8217; imprisoned for breaking pregnant partner\u2019s jaw in Limerick"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A MAN who broke his partner\u2019s jaw, forcing her to lose two teeth, has been sentenced to five years and three months&#8217; imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>John McCarthy, with an address at Kilmurry View, Dublin Road, Castletroy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Limerick<\/a>, was charged with assaulting his partner at the time in her home on March 30, 2025. Limerick Circuit Court heard that the man was drinking with two other men while the victim was at home.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecuting Barrister for the State, John O\u2019Sullivan, detailed between 6-7pm Mr McCarthy \u201cfalsely accused the victim of going off with one of the men\u201d, kicked her in the thigh twice, slapped her in the face, and held her by the throat, which caused her to lose consciousness.<\/p>\n<p>When the woman later regained consciousness, the men had left, and Mr McCarthy was drinking and listening to music.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/crime-and-courts\/2045775\/limerick-would-need-extra-100-gardai-without-cctv-monitoring-centre.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Limerick \u2018would need extra 100 gardai\u2019 without CCTV monitoring centre<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The man\u2019s assault on her fractured her jaw and caused her to lose two teeth. The court heard the hospital required her to have surgery to fix her jaw.<\/p>\n<p>At the hospital, pictures were taken of her injuries &#8211; which also included bruising on her thigh.<\/p>\n<p>The woman checked herself into a domestic violence shelter. While she was there, she received a threatening call from McCarthy, where he called her \u201ca handicap\u201d, and said \u201cyou know what kind I am\u201d. The court heard this put her in fear, and she reported the man to garda\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p>The woman\u2019s victim impact statement said that Mr McCarthy\u2019s actions \u201cforced me to leave my family home for months\u201d and left her \u201ca shell of the person I was\u201d. The statement said \u201cMy sisters had to see me in hospital recovering from jaw surgery\u201d from the violent assault, and that the woman now suffers from panic attacks and flashbacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a shell of the person I was\u201d and \u201cI still feel pain to this day\u201d, the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>Barrister Amy Nix, defending Mr McCarthy, said in mitigation that the man is working at the prison&#8217;s carpentry shop and is pursuing education.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Nix detailed that Mr McCarthy has a &#8220;significant number of convictions all related to addiction\u201d, and that when he committed the assault \u201che was in the throes of grief\u201d. She asked the court to give him credit for this early plea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has five little children\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Colin Daly said in his sentencing that a mitigating factor was Mr McCarthy\u2019s \u201cmother died and his [different] partner delivered a still born child and took her own life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Daly said when Mr McCarthy was accused he \u201cdenied\u201d the relationship said the assault was a \u201cfabrication\u201d. The judge continued that the victim was pregnant at the time of this assault and that Mr McCarthy had been \u201cirrationally possessive\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Daly said Mr McCarthy is \u201ca violent individual\u201d, that has a \u201crelevant previous conviction for domestic violence\u201d. The judge detailed that Mr McCarthy has 132 previous convictions.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Daly proceeded to sentence John McCarthy to five years and three months\u2019 prison, with the final 15 months suspended.
