{"id":404616,"date":"2026-03-26T08:40:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T08:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/404616\/"},"modified":"2026-03-26T08:40:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T08:40:11","slug":"irish-consumers-face-rising-costs-as-war-in-iran-threatens-to-escalate-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/404616\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish consumers face rising costs as war in Iran threatens to escalate \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Consumers are facing months of rising prices as the conflict in the Gulf squeezes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oil\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oil\/\">oil<\/a> supplies and fuels inflation, two heavyweight forecasters have warned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/economic-and-social-research-institute\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/economic-and-social-research-institute\/\">Economic and Social Research Institute<\/a> (ESRI), an independent think tank, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/central-bank\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/central-bank\/\">Central Bank<\/a> both issued sharp warnings of inflationary pressures across the economy as higher oil prices begin to bite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Their warnings come as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\/\">Iran<\/a> poured scorn on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\">US<\/a> claims that it was considering peace proposals, though Tehran stopped short of rejecting efforts out of hand. In Washington, the White House said that president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> favoured a peace deal but was also willing to \u201cunleash hell\u201d against Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At home, Opposition parties were sharply critical of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/government\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/government\/\">Government<\/a>\u2019s package of measures announced earlier this week, claiming the relief from higher fuel prices did not go far enough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">T\u00e1naiste <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\/\">Simon Harris<\/a> said the Government could introduce further packages later in the year, acknowledging that the surplus expected in the public finances for the end of the year would now be smaller.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In its latest quarterly bulletin, the ESRI predicted headline inflation in the Irish economy will average 3.2 per cent this year, up from a previous forecast of 2.1 per cent, and remain elevated at 2.7 per cent next year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A more prolonged conflict in the Middle East with an extended spike in energy costs could see \u201cprice rises across a wide range of goods and services\u201d resulting in higher inflation and a dampening of economic activity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/03\/25\/forecourt-fuel-prices-fall-but-vary-following-government-interventions\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Significant variations at petrol and diesel pumps across Ireland after excise duty cutsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Even if the conflict ends soon there will be a lasting impact on prices here, it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cProlonged disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz would put considerable upward pressure on oil and gas prices, and raise uncertainty,\u201d the ESRI said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The think tank was critical of the Government measures, saying they represent a \u201csubsidy to higher-income households\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Central Bank said headline inflation in the Irish economy could double to 4.2 per cent in the coming months if there is a prolonged conflict in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In its latest quarterly bulletin, the bank said the current spike in oil and gas prices would lead to lower growth and higher inflation and warned that lower-income households would be \u201cdisproportionately\u201d impacted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Airlines chiefs also warned the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oireachtas\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oireachtas\/\">Oireachtas<\/a> transport committee that holidaymakers could face higher air fares following the surge in oil prices sparked by the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Jet fuel prices have soared 50 per cent since the US and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\/\">Israel<\/a> struck Iran four weeks ago, according to Irishman Willie Walsh, chief executive of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iata\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iata\/\">International Air Transport Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Carriers in some regions are already passing on the extra cost to passengers, added Walsh, whose organisation represents 85 per cent of the world\u2019s airlines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The outlook in the Gulf looks deeply uncertain, with the US suggesting it is seeking a peace deal with Iran, while at the same time moving thousands of troops and equipment to the region. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe president\u2019s preference is always peace.
