They\u2019re a surprise because they\u2019re not real. They\u2019re enticing because it\u2019s a compelling lure. And just as with those other campaigns, the attack hijacks brands to convince you it\u2019s real.<\/p>\n<p>The text you\u2019ll see most appears to come from Amazon. It will confirm a refund has been issued because of a product recall or a marketplace seller who has not met their standards. The text includes a link to claim the refund. Hundreds of millions of phone users have Amazon accounts, which is why the lure lands so effectively.<\/p>\n<p>But it doesn\u2019t have to be Amazon. The <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ftb.ca.gov\/about-ftb\/newsroom\/news-releases\/2025-08-the-ftb-warns-californians.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.ftb.ca.gov\/about-ftb\/newsroom\/news-releases\/2025-08-the-ftb-warns-californians.html\" aria-label=\"State of California\">State of California<\/a> has warned citizens to beware a similar text scam. Per <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"=https:\/\/www.malwarebytes.com\/blog\/news\/2025\/09\/tax-refund-scam-targets-californians\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:=https:\/\/www.malwarebytes.com\/blog\/news\/2025\/09\/tax-refund-scam-targets-californians\" aria-label=\"MalwareBytes\">MalwareBytes<\/a>, the texts tell users \u201cyour tax refund claim has been processed and approved,\u201d with a link to \u201cprovide accurate collection information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Millions of these text messages are sent out daily. Most won\u2019t get through \u2014 stopped by networks or devices. But even without that technical filter, never click any links in texts, unless it\u2019s categorically from a contact and expected.<\/p>\n<p>You should also delete all such texts on your phone, per the <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/06\/23\/fbi-warning-all-smartphone-users-must-delete-these-messages\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/06\/23\/fbi-warning-all-smartphone-users-must-delete-these-messages\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"FBI\u2019s advice\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">FBI\u2019s advice<\/a> to smartphone users. If you have any doubts, contact the apparent sender to confirm the message is legitimate through usual channels, not by replying to the message.
