Chinese president Xi Jinping<\/a> hosted his country\u2019s largest military parade on Wednesday as he sought to recast Beijing<\/a> as the custodian of a post-US international order at a time of deep geopolitical uncertainty.<\/p>\n

More than 20 world leaders including Russia\u2019s Vladimir Putin<\/a> and reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong-un<\/a> gathered in Beijing for the \u201cvictory day\u201d event marking 80 years since Japan\u2019s defeat at the end of the second World War.<\/p>\n

The highly choreographed spectacle aimed to project China\u2019s military might and diplomatic clout amid doubts over the United States\u2019 global role, as US president Donald Trump slashes foreign aid, retreats from international institutions and wages a sweeping trade war on allies and rivals alike \u2013 Reuters.<\/p>\n
