Actors can be relied upon to understand the assignment. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/colin-farrell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/colin-farrell\/\">Colin Farrell<\/a> is a passionate speaker, persuasive fundraiser and seasoned Hollywood performer who would bring a touch of swagger to the role. Better still, Americans have already heard of him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">With the \u00c1ras located down the road from his home suburb of Castleknock, a stint as president Farrell would count as a return to his roots. As for the bruising rough-and-tumble of campaigning, that should be no bother to a man who once auditioned to be in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/boyzone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/boyzone\/\">Boyzone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Samantha Mumba<img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Samantha Mumba is the obvious Eurovision-adjacent candidate. Photograph: Andres Poveda <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Every presidential election needs a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eurovision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eurovision\/\">Eurovision<\/a>-adjacent candidate, and while Jedward would no doubt be keen on a job-share, the smart choice is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/samantha-mumba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/samantha-mumba\/\">Samantha Mumba<\/a>. She might have met her Waterloo this year at Eurosong, the national contest, but her eagerness to represent Ireland on an international stage has been noted. Maybe it\u2019s time we tested the theory that there is no better training for taking over the world than being a Billie Barry kid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There\u2019s also the fact that, in 2005, as part of a stunt for RT\u00c9 TV show Anonymous, Mumba attended an \u00c1ras reception disguised as a nun. And, as he famously told us in his big speech in Taken, he has a very particular set of skills. Skills he has acquired over a very long career. Skills that make him a nightmare for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\">Catherine Connolly<\/a> and other would-be presidents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">These skills include seeing off controversy, being deadpan and possibly dating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pamela-anderson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pamela-anderson\/\">Pamela Anderson<\/a> \u2013 the rumoured relationship hasn\u2019t been confirmed by either actor. Romance or faux-mance? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/katie-hannon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/katie-hannon\/\">Katie Hannon<\/a>, RT\u00c9\u2019s designated candidate interviewer, should be given the chance to get to the bottom of this mystery between now and polling day.<\/p>\n<p>David McCullagh<img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"David McCullagh could be the successor to Dev\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/A2EIC2M56ZDQNEJATQVXM5RUUI.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/>David McCullagh could be the successor to Dev <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking of RT\u00c9, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/miriam-o-callaghan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/miriam-o-callaghan\/\">Miriam O\u2019Callaghan<\/a> has long been the Montrose name mentioned in connection with the presidency, though colleague <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/david-mccullagh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/david-mccullagh\/\">David McCullagh<\/a> has some solid credentials of his own. Yes, he\u2019s just been announced as the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio\/2025\/08\/29\/claire-byrne-rte-losing-one-today-show-presenter-to-newstalk-was-misfortune-losing-two-looks-like-carelessness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio\/2025\/08\/29\/claire-byrne-rte-losing-one-today-show-presenter-to-newstalk-was-misfortune-losing-two-looks-like-carelessness\/\"> replacement for Claire Byrne on Radio 1\u2019s Today programme<\/a>, but is that really the challenge he\u2019s looking for?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">McCullagh, as his books and two-part documentary on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eamon-de-valera\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eamon-de-valera\/\">\u00c9amon de Valera<\/a> show, is an expert on one past holder of the role. Might he be harbouring a secret, deeply buried desire to become president himself? She\u2019s surprised to discover she has inadvertently agreed to a marriage proposal, for example, which might point to a high risk of diplomatic disaster while in office. But she can recognise a cracker blow-dry when she sees one, while she also possesses a qualification no previous president has declared on their LinkedIn: a certificate in psychic readings.<\/p>\n<p>Brendan, Dublin City Council\u2019s AI tour guide<img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Brendan would be Ireland's first AI president\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/KHQCQWOGQRB2NPYUMCJ5J6WL7Y.png\"   width=\"800\" height=\"1028\"\/>Brendan would be Ireland&#8217;s first AI president <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This summer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-city-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-city-council\/\">Dublin City Council<\/a> partnered with artificial intelligence app company CityMe AI to introduce Brendan, who we were told was an AI-powered tour guide. This obvious interest in heritage and the arts should make him a worthy successor to Michael D Higgins in the eyes of all but the most technophobic of voters.<\/p>\n<p>Man Who Slipped on Ice<img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Man Who Slipped on the Ice - a smooth run to the &#xC1;ras? \" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/3HE5DFR4I5M3L3H65QM2DD5NGY.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/>Man Who Slipped on the Ice &#8211; a smooth run to the \u00c1ras?  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland \u201cneeds a president who can bring people together\u201d, says Gavin. Step forward (carefully) Man Who Slipped on Ice. The veteran of a viral RT\u00c9 News report from the Dublin pavements of January 2010 could be the one true unity candidate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Nothing is known about him except he was not seriously hurt. To maintain this enigma, no voter would be allowed to see his face, though they would remain compelled by his innate relatability to elect him. As president, Man Who Slipped on Ice would be proficient in the international language of slapstick, while providing an enduring commentary on the frailty of the human condition. Born in 1996, she\u2019s constitutionally too young to run this year. But could she be laying the groundwork for a 2032 bid?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAll the big boys, all the Berties\/ All the envelopes, yeah, they hurt me,\u201d she sings on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/review\/2025\/08\/28\/cmat-euro-country-review-excellent-album-that-will-make-you-want-to-cry-and-dance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/review\/2025\/08\/28\/cmat-euro-country-review-excellent-album-that-will-make-you-want-to-cry-and-dance\/\">Euro-Country<\/a>, in a spot of political commentary that may or may not double as a future negative-campaigning tactic \u2013 a sort of \u201cdon\u2019t even think about it, Ahern\u201d hiding in plain sight. Perhaps her recent single Running\/Planning is also a clue to her ambitions?
