{"id":40688,"date":"2025-09-03T11:06:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T11:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/40688\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T11:06:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T11:06:08","slug":"tauranga-art-gallery-to-reopen-after-two-year-9-million-redevelopment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/40688\/","title":{"rendered":"Tauranga Art Gallery to reopen after two-year $9 million redevelopment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\"> Funding included $1.150m  from TECT, Pub Charity and Tauranga Art Gallery Foundation external grants and a Tauranga Art Gallery Trust contribution of $3.274m.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">Tauranga Art Gallery Trust chair Rosemary Protheroe said the revamp had come from two different directions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhen the council announced Te Manawataki o Te Papa, we [Gallery Trust] sat back on our haunches and thought, \u2018wow, this is a fantastic opportunity for us\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">Protheroe told the Bay of Plenty Times the gallery had to reorient to align <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/taurangas-history-showcased-in-documentary-series\/XGJ2RHA4FRHNDMC77JEQZLFLFI\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/taurangas-history-showcased-in-documentary-series\/XGJ2RHA4FRHNDMC77JEQZLFLFI\/\">with the new precinct. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe needed to be taking our position as part of the larger precinct, and in doing that, it opened other opportunities to look at what the public was asking from us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\"> Tauranga would have a \u201cstate-of-the-art facility\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe have achieved a fantastic space that is future-proofed and vibrant, it\u2019s for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\"> The gallery team continued  work offsite during the closure, creating a pop-up gallery in central Tauranga, running children\u2019s art workshops and continuing ongoing artist engagement. <\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Seismic strengthening, lighting and air-conditioning systems were upgraded bringing the gallery up to international museum standards. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">The gallery will reopen with nine exhibits by artists from across New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">Its reopening line-up includes exhibitions and collaborations showcasing portraiture, textile art, jewellery, video work and augmented reality (AR) art experiences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">Gallery visitors can experience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/kahu\/papamoa-artist-kereama-taepa-is-making-old-maori-art-pop-in-the-new-digital-world\/JSGAJVUA2ZESNPQ33CZPLKC5MM\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/kahu\/papamoa-artist-kereama-taepa-is-making-old-maori-art-pop-in-the-new-digital-world\/JSGAJVUA2ZESNPQ33CZPLKC5MM\/\">Kereama Taepa\u2019s<\/a> Whakairo \u2013 an augmented reality art experience. <\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">Taepa said  it had felt \u201clike an age\u201d since the gallery journey had begun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI\u2019m so excited to finally share the work with everyone and unleash it into the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">He said origins and starting points were a theme running through the installation, and he was grateful to be able to create for the new gallery space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cMy very first exhibited AR artwork was also here at the gallery, back in 2012, so it feels like a full circle thing too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">Other work includes portrait favourites Old Friends by Samoan mother and daughter, Pusi and Vaimaila Urale, from the Tauranga Art Gallery collections and, showing for the first time in Tauranga, work by senior artist Darcy Nicholas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">Nicholas\u2019 exhibition draws together a curated selection of drawings, paintings, jewellery and carvings spanning nearly six decades of practice. <\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">Toi Tauranga Art Gallery director Sonya Korohina said the  biggest challenge was being closed for two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been a part of the community for 16 years and are the creative fabric for our local artists, so being closed has been difficult to not have that connection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">She said  an art gallery in the city centre would give a \u201csense of place\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHaving a cultural institution that you can engage with through art as a portal is a way for our community to build that sense of place, identity and understand different perspectives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">Korohina told the Bay of Plenty Times the gallery represented artists not only from the Bay of Plenty,  but also nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWith contemporary artists, art enables us to understand and see different perspectives, and see the world differently, more than just through our phones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe live in such a global world right now that often we\u2019re not anchored, and that\u2019s what art really can do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">The gallery will  open to the public with a free community celebration  on Saturday,  November 15, from 10am to 4pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/author\/kaitlyn-morrell\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Kaitlyn Morrell<\/b><\/a><b> is a multimedia journalist for the Bay of Plenty Times and Rotorua Daily Post.
