Just days after celebrating the world premiere of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/chloe-zhao\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chlo\u00e9 Zhao\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/hamnet\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cHamnet\u201d<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/telluride\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Telluride<\/a>, he flew across the country to attend the New York City premiere of Oliver Hermanus\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/the-history-of-sound\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe History of Sound,\u201d<\/a> which debuted at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/cannes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cannes<\/a> earlier this year, alongside co-star Josh O\u2019Connor. All this while being in production for Sam Mendes\u2019 Beatles biopic and in off-and-on production for Richard Linklater\u2019s \u201cMerrily We Roll Along.\u201d Mr. Mescal, let\u2019s hope you\u2019re sleeping!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHamnet\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/criticism\/movies\/hamnet-movie-review-paul-mescal-jessie-buckley-shakespeare-1235148327\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reviews have been revelatory<\/a>, coining it an instant awards contender. \u201cIt\u2019s been such a relief for all of us, you know,\u201d Mescal told IndieWire on the red carpet for his MUBI release. \u201cHaving a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/film\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">film<\/a> premiere in any context is like giving a baby out into the world and we\u2019re so, so thrilled that people seem to be, not [necessarily] responding positively, but people seem to be understanding the film that we made as filmmakers. It\u2019s a big, big relief.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/criticism\/movies\/remake-review-ross-mcelwee-son-1235148843\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-card-index=\"0\" data-post-id=\"1235148843\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_1856.jpeg\" alt=\"Remake\" height=\"168\" width=\"300\"   loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-attachment-id=\"1235148846\" data-wp-size=\"nova_size__sixteenbynine_small_cropped\"\/><\/a>  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/interviews\/nouvelle-vague-zoey-deutch-interview-1235148722\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-card-index=\"1\" data-post-id=\"1235148722\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_1655-e1756846259644.jpeg\" alt=\"Zoey Deutch and Richard Linklater\" height=\"168\" width=\"300\"   loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-attachment-id=\"1235148247\" data-wp-size=\"nova_size__sixteenbynine_small_cropped\"\/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>In the midst of his releases, Mescal is preparing to play Paul McCartney in Mendes\u2019 four Beatles films, set to release in theaters April 2028 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/news\/breaking-news\/the-beatles-biopic-cast-revealed-sam-mendes-1235112397\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as the first \u201cbingeable\u201d movie experience.<\/a> As for if he has connected with the real life counterpart, Mescal revealed, \u201cI have, yeah. He\u2019s an extraordinary man, like to spend any time\u2014 it\u2019s a crazy sentence to say that I\u2019ve spent time with that man, let alone play him.\u201d As for if Mescal will be doing his own singing in the films, he said, \u201cYeah, yeah, absolutely yeah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, he\u2019s filming Linklater\u2019s decades-long project \u201cMerrily We Roll Along,\u201d a project that he remained a bit more tightly sealed about. \u201cIt\u2019s one that he\u2019s kind of swearing us to silence on, because if we start talking about it now, there\u2019ll be nothing to talk about in 20 years, but I can say that he is one of my favorite directors in the world,\u201d he said. \u201cI make my way to Texas every couple of years and see him and see Beanie [Feldstein] and see Ben [Platt] and get to work with them. It\u2019s also such a crazy process that it\u2019s, like, so individual for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe History of Sound\u201d made waves at Cannes for its sensitive portrayal of a love affair between Mescal and O\u2019Connor\u2019s characters. The former had nothing but praise for working with Hermanus: \u201cOliver made one of my favorite films that I\u2019ve seen in the last give years, \u2018Moffie.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he\u2019s a true auteur,\u201d he continued. \u201cHe\u2019s just got such a clear means of attack on scenes and who these characters are, and he knows how to frame them and put them at the center of the story. I loved working with him, he\u2019s one of my closest friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been very lucky with the actors I\u2019ve worked with across my career, with Josh [O\u2019Connor], Andrew [Scott], Jessie [Buckley], Saoirse [Ronan], Daisy [Edgar-Jones], where nothing was ever intentional in terms of how you build a relationship [onscreen],\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/interviews\/paul-mescal-the-history-of-sound-interview-1235125614\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mescal previously told IndieWire<\/a> of creating chemistry with his co-star over an interview at the J.W. Marriott hotel in Cannes the day before \u201cThe History of Sound\u201d premiered at the Palais.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt either stands on its own two legs, or it doesn\u2019t happen,\u201d Mescal said. \u201cWith Josh, it very much felt comfortable. We knew each other, and we\u2019d been talking about the film since 2020, so that\u2019s when we first initially connected. He\u2019s such a good soul. We\u2019re quite similar in terms of the work that we like and are relatively similar as people. It just grew from there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A MUBI release, \u201cThe History of Sound\u201d opens in theaters on Friday, September 12.
