{"id":40978,"date":"2025-09-03T14:06:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T14:06:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/40978\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T14:06:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T14:06:10","slug":"carmody-groarke-reveals-childrens-pavilion-at-dulwich-picture-gallery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/40978\/","title":{"rendered":"Carmody Groarke reveals children&#8217;s pavilion at Dulwich Picture Gallery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/carmody-groarke\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carmody Groarke<\/a> has added the timber ArtPlay Pavilion to the gardens of the John Soane-designed Dulwich Picture Gallery in south <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/london\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The pavilion forms part of the\u00a0biggest redevelopment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dulwichpicturegallery.org.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dulwich Picture Gallery<\/a>, which was the world&#8217;s first purpose-built public art gallery, in over 20 years.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2242998 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ArtPlay-Pavilion-dulwich-picture-gallery-carmody-groarke_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x682.jpg\" alt=\"ArtPlay Pavilion at Dulwich Picture Gallery \" width=\"2364\" height=\"1891\"  \/>Carmody Groarke has unveiled the ArtPlay Pavilion<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[We aimed to] connect more people with art in the landscape, broaden the gallery&#8217;s audiences, and create a permanent pavilion for young generations,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/carmodygroarke.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carmody Groarke<\/a> co-founder Andy Groarke told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s about creating a joyful, low-carbon space that welcomes children and families into Dulwich Picture Gallery&#8217;s historic grounds while also giving adults new places to pause, shelter, and enjoy the gardens.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2243065\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Dulwich-Picture-Gallery-ArtPlay-Pavilion-and-Sculpture-Garden-\u00a9Luca-Piffaretti_DPG-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"ArtPlay pavilion at Dulwich Picture Gallery\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\"  \/>It was built in the grounds of the Dulwich Picture Gallery<\/p>\n<p>Set within the redesigned grounds of the museum, the ArtPlay Pavilion aims to continue the legacy of the institution by creating a dedicated space for children.<\/p>\n<p>Rotated at a 45-degree angle to Soane&#8217;s building, the pavilion is intended to complement the surrounding landscape while making reference to the existing gallery, which is considered one of the most significant buildings of the 19th century.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2243000 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ArtPlay-Pavilion-dulwich-picture-gallery-carmody-groarke_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"ArtPlay Pavilion at Dulwich Picture Gallery \" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The timber cladding is a nod to the existing building<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The canopies and circular windows are oversized and playful, drawing children in,&#8221; explained Groarke. &#8220;Painted Douglas fir gives the building a light, textured character that belongs among the trees, while the canopies reference Soane&#8217;s original pale-blue doors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The aim was to make a building that belongs to the estate and all of its visitors not just for children: adults use the canopies and outdoor spaces, while the interior offers children a more immersive and imaginative world,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2243011 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ArtPlay-Pavilion-dulwich-picture-gallery-carmody-groarke_dezeen_2364_col_13-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Children's play space at Dulwich Picture Gallery\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>The pavilion has a cross-shaped plan<\/p>\n<p>Along with the colour of canopies, the choice of vertical timber slats for the cladding was a nod to the brickwork of the Soane building.<\/p>\n<p>The interior of the square building is divided into a cruciform plan, with the central play space lit by a skylight. This references the skylights in the main gallery, which were an innovation at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Carmody Groarke also created large circular windows to connect ArtPlay Pavilion to the surrounding landscape, which has been remodelled by landscape artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kimwilkie.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kim Wilkie<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2019\/06\/10\/hill-house-box-carmody-groarke-charles-rennie-mackintosh-museum\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/hill-house-box-carmody-groarke-charles-rennie-mackintosh_dezeen_2364_sq_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Hill House Box by Carmody Groarke built around Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Hill House\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Carmody Groarke builds chainmail shed around Mackintosh&#8217;s Hill House\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Its cruciform plan and central top light recall Soane&#8217;s spatial innovations within the main existing gallery, while outside the stepped timber surfaces subtly echo the brick relief of the original gallery facade,&#8221; explained Groarke.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Large circular windows and generous canopies extend the welcome of the architecture into the landscape, creating thresholds that connect inside to outside, and to art.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2242999 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ArtPlay-Pavilion-dulwich-picture-gallery-carmody-groarke_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Timber roof at Camorra Grovel pavilion \" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The space is divided into four colour-themed zones<\/p>\n<p>The cross-shaped play space is centred around a circular couch, with the interiors designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hold_artcollective\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hold Art Collective<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/zoefrancisspowage\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zoe Francis Spowage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Surrounding it, four distinctly coloured spaces were informed by paintings within the main gallery.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2243064\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Copy-of-ArtPlay-Pavilion-Dulwich-Picture-Gallery-2025.-\u00a9Luca-Piffaretti-852x682.jpg\" alt=\"Children's pavilion at Dulwich Picture Gallery\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1891\"  \/>One of the spaces includes a slide<\/p>\n<p>These rooms include a large slide, a version of the Rialto Bridge in Venice and a swing informed by Nicolas Poussin&#8217;s paintings of clouds.<\/p>\n<p>The enclosed corner spaces contain the pavilion&#8217;s entrance, indoor and outdoor toilets, as well as an energy centre that contributes to reducing the carbon impact of the whole gallery site.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2243008 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ArtPlay-Pavilion-dulwich-picture-gallery-carmody-groarke_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Swing informed by clouds\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>It also contains a swing informed by paintings of clouds. Photo by Linda Shakesby<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The cruciform creates interlinked smaller spaces, with playful nooks at a child&#8217;s scale that encourage exploration and activity, while remaining flexible enough to host many kinds of learning and play,&#8221; said Groake.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The sensory-led play activities inside the ArtPlay Pavilion, designed by HoLD Collective, reference the gallery&#8217;s historic paintings, with each corner in the space dedicated to a different element \u2013 sunlight, water, wind, earth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2243003 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ArtPlay-Pavilion-dulwich-picture-gallery-carmody-groarke_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x682.jpg\" alt=\"Cafe and pavilion in Dulwich\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1891\"  \/>A cottage on the site has been converted into a canteen<\/p>\n<p>Designed to be sustainably responsible, the entire pavilion was built from timber with a roof constructed from two-metre lengths of timber. This negated the need for engineered timber, which needs to be sourced from outside England.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The pavilion is built entirely from timber, with a reciprocal roof of UK-grown Douglas fir \u2013 using many small spans and pieces so that sourcing could remain local,&#8221; said Groake.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Natural ventilation, shading canopies, and photovoltaics cut operational energy, while a new ground-source heat pump links the ArtPlay Pavilion, Canteen, and Soane&#8217;s gallery into one low-carbon system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2243066\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Kim-Wilkie-The-Lovington-Sculpture-Meadow-Dulwich-Picture-Gallery.-Photo-by-Tom-Short-2025-852x604.j.jpeg\" alt=\"Landscape surrounding Dulwich Picture Gallery\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1677\"  \/>The surrounding landscape by Kim Wilkie includes a hilly amphitheatre. Photo\u00a0by Tom Short<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the pavilion, a new sculpture garden has been created, including a series of small hills arranged in the shape of a croissant. A playful slide designed by artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/harold_offeh\/?hl=en-gb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harold Offeh<\/a> was also placed next to the building.<\/p>\n<p>A largely disused cottage on the site has been transformed into a canteen, while a previous entrance to the grounds has been relocated to provide better access.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2243063 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Copy-of-ArtPlay-Pavilion-and-Sculpture-Garden-Dulwich-Picture-Gallery-2025.-Photo-by-Linda-Shakesby..jpeg\" alt=\"Slide by Harold Offeh\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1751\"  \/>A bright slide forms part of the sculpture garden.
