Over the course of my (almost) 40-year career as a beauty editor on glossy magazines such as Red and Good Housekeeping,\u00a0I tried and tested thousands of fancy creams. Every day at work dozens of new products would arrive on my desk, sent to me to review. The shelves in my office cupboard were overflowing with make-up and hair, skin and body care and I could take home anything I wanted.<\/p>\n

Now I\u2019m retired I have to buy my own beauty products, which means my bathroom shelves are more minimal and I\u2019m picky about what I spend on. Alongside my thrice-yearly tiny shot of Botox<\/a>, this is what I buy\u2026<\/p>\n

Even now that I\u2019m post-menopausal, I still get the odd breakout, so this was a real find. A combination of azelaic, salicylic and hyaluronic acids, it gently unclogs pores, eases redness and lightly hydrates. A brilliant buy at any age for troubled skin.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll always find this in my handbag. Unlike many lip balms<\/a> that simply create\u00a0a barrier (to slow moisture loss), this deeply moisturises to leave my lips soothed and nourished, with a pretty sheen.<\/p>\n

The slim wand catches even the tiniest lashes (helpful if they are fine and sparse like mine) while the formulation gives low-key lift and definition. At the other end there\u2019s a clear brow gel<\/a> (apply sparingly as it sets firmly and quickly).<\/p>\n

I originally bought this because it was on offer and it\u2019s now my go-to. I like that it\u2019s a 500ml bottle, moisturises deeply, yet isn\u2019t sticky. My 61-year-old skin is softer, a bit less crepey and more luminous for it.<\/p>\n

This is gentle and thorough. Follow up with a second cleanse if you wear heavy make-up, or if, like me, you like the feel of a rinse-off.<\/p>\n

This blends easily and won\u2019t look cakey, flake or settle into pores. It has a useful blurring effect, too.<\/p>\n

Make-up artist Lisa is renowned for creating beautiful shades that work across different skin tones. I use the brown pencils for everyday and the gold if I am feeling fancy. They glide on without tugging, can be smudged and stay put.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re in midlife and have coloured hair, it\u2019s worth spending more on looking after it. This duo turns dry, coloured hair into something softer, smoother and more manageable (I notice the difference if I don\u2019t use them).<\/p>\n

Its peptides, plus a supporting cast of hydrating, brightening, skin-barrier-reinforcing ingredients, signal to the skin\u00a0to make more collagen.<\/p>\n
