A sinuous curtain rail and bright-yellow carpeted islands help to define areas for testing products within this mattress store<\/a> in Madrid<\/a>, Spain, designed by local studio JotaJota+.<\/p>\n

JotaJota+<\/a> directors Jorge Gabald\u00f3n and Javier Onrubia designed the 285-square-metre space for Colch\u00f3n Expr\u00e9s, which operates several stores selling mattresses from a variety of leading brands.<\/p>\n

The interior of this store on Madrid’s Calle Ribera de Curtidores is organised as a sequence of distinct environments that can be screened off so customers can try products as if in the privacy of their own home.<\/p>\n

“Rather than a continuous retail floor, the space unfolds as a series of settings, allowing visitors to engage with the products in conditions closer to everyday life,” the studio explained.<\/p>\n

Customers enter through a bold yellow portal that lends the store a striking presence on the street. The company’s signature colour is used as a recurring element that brings a sense of consistency to the interior.<\/p>\n

Wood panelling extends around the store’s perimeter, forming a uniform backdrop for headboards and signage relating to the different brands.<\/p>\n

Mattresses are displayed on circular carpets placed on top of neutral, large-format porcelain tiles.<\/p>\n

The yellow islands were designed to create intimate and clearly define spaces for the individual products.<\/p>\n

Suspended tracks support sheer curtains that can be used to partition off areas around the beds, with rails at different heights creating a layered interplay of light, texture and views.<\/p>\n

“Movement is neither prescribed nor entirely open; it unfolds through soft transitions and partial concealments, allowing each visitor to construct their own path,” the architects added.<\/p>\n

Utilities including lighting tracks and cables are left exposed but blend in with the white-painted ceilings, while the meandering yellow curtain track leads the eye through the space.<\/p>\n

Alongside the spotlights from Barcelona-based Luz Negra<\/a>, large suspended paper shades from Danish brand Hay<\/a> and smaller wall-mounted lamps provide a more domestic feel.<\/p>\n

Other recent shop designs include a New Delhi sneaker store<\/a> with a shoe-shaped sculpture dangling over its entrance and a Stockholm outlet<\/a> for Swedish-Danish\u00a0fragrance brand En Doft.<\/p>\n
