{"id":41340,"date":"2025-09-03T17:50:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T17:50:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/41340\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T17:50:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T17:50:08","slug":"minister-cautions-against-speculation-on-cause-of-blackwater-fish-kill-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/41340\/","title":{"rendered":"Minister cautions against speculation on cause of Blackwater fish kill \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Minister of State for Fisheries and the Marine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/timmy-dooley\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/timmy-dooley\/\">Timmy Dooley<\/a> has cautioned against people speculating as to the cause of a pollution incident which killed thousands of fish on the Blackwater, as various agencies continue to work to try to identify the source.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Dooley said he was well aware of the impact that the fish kill has had on anglers in north <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\">Cork<\/a> from meeting them recently in Mallow, but he urged people to wait until the relevant agencies have gathered all the data necessary to identify the cause of the pollution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe are continuing to work with scientific and environmental experts across all our agencies to establish the cause of this devastating incident. Given the complexity and scale of this work, it is important that we are careful not to speculate on potential causes until we have all the data available to make evidence-informed assessments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Dooley was speaking after chairing an inter-agency meeting involving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/inland-fisheries-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/inland-fisheries-ireland\/\">Inland Fisheries Ireland<\/a> (IFI), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/environmental-protection-agency\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/environmental-protection-agency\/\">Environmental Protection Agency<\/a> (EPA), the Local Authorities Water Programme, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-parks-&amp;-wildlife-service\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-parks-&amp;-wildlife-service\/\">National Parks and Wildlife Service<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/health-service-executive\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/health-service-executive\/\">Health Service Executive<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/marine-institute\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/marine-institute\/\">Marine Institute<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/uisce-eireann\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/uisce-eireann\/\">Uisce \u00c9ireann<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAll agencies involved are engaging with the relevant stakeholders and will continue to provide updated data and information as it becomes available and I am updating Government colleagues as the investigation progresses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">At a press conference in Mallow on August 22nd chaired by Mr Dooley, IFI senior fisheries environmental officer Andrew Gillespie said it now looked as if the fish kill was due to some \u201cenvironmental irritant\u201d. The IFI later explained this meant a pollutant had caused the kill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Dooley\u2019s call for patience comes as the EPA confirmed it did not believe there was any link between the fish kill and operations at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dairygold\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dairygold\/\">Dairygold<\/a>\u2019s Lombardstown Mill which is located less than 500m south of the Blackwater.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The EPA told The Irish Times in a statement that Dairygold\u2019s feed mill at Lombardstown was one of a number of EPA licensed sites that was asked to provide a list of any discharges to the Blackwater or any tributaries of the river.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe licensee reported that there are no discharges of either process water or stormwater from the site: process water is collected in a tanker and conveyed to Mallow wastewater treatment plant weekly, while stormwater is collected for recovery by a licensed waste management firm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2025\/08\/31\/creamery-denies-involvement-in-river-blackwater-fish-kill\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Creamery denies involvement in river Blackwater fish killOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The EPA said its inspectors visited the feed mill on August 28th and confirmed for themselves that process water is collected by tanker from the site while stormwater is collected for recovery by a licensed waste management firm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cTherefore, this facility is not regarded by EPA as being a possible source of any polluting materials which may have contributed to the loss of fish life in the Blackwater and tributaries in August 2025,\u201d said the EPA in its statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dairygold said in a statement that it operated its feed mill at Lombardstown in accordance with an industrial emissions licence issued by the EPA and that there had been no discharge from the site, which also accommodates a Dairygold Superstore retail outlet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cWastewater generated on site is transported to authorised off-site wastewater treatment facilities, with approval from the EPA.
