{"id":41731,"date":"2025-09-03T21:55:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T21:55:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/41731\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T21:55:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T21:55:07","slug":"at-least-15-people-dead-in-lisbon-funicular-crash-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/41731\/","title":{"rendered":"At least 15 people dead in Lisbon funicular crash \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At least 15 people died and around 18 were injured on Wednesday when Lisbon\u2019s Gloria funicular railway car, which is popular with tourists, derailed and crashed, an emergency medical service spokesman told reporters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Authorities would not identify the victims or disclose their nationalities, but said some foreign nationals were among the dead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cIt\u2019s a tragic day for our city &#8230; Lisbon is in mourning, it is a tragic, tragic incident,\u201d Carlos Moedas, the mayor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/portugal\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/portugal\/\">Portuguese<\/a> capital, told reporters. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">T\u00e1naiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Harris said in a statement: \u201cI am deeply saddened by reports of a tragic incident in Lisbon today. This is a terrible day for the city and my thoughts, and those of people across Ireland, are with the families of people who have lost their lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIreland\u2019s embassy in Lisbon stands ready to provide assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The tram derailed shortly after 6pm local time and crashed against a building. Some three million people use it every year after it was classified as a national monument more than two decades ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The line, which opened in 1885, connects Lisbon\u2019s downtown area near the Restauradores Square with the Bairro Alto (Upper Quarter), famous for its vibrant nightlife.
