{"id":41902,"date":"2025-09-03T23:43:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T23:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/41902\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T23:43:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T23:43:07","slug":"nigel-farage-tells-us-congress-graham-linehan-arrest-proves-uk-has-become-north-korea-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/41902\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigel Farage tells US Congress Graham Linehan arrest proves UK has \u2018become North Korea\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph  b-it-article-body__text--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nigel-farage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nigel-farage\/\">Nigel Farage <\/a>compared the United Kingdom to North Korea when discussing free speech and the arrest of Graham Linehan at a US Congress hearing on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  b-it-article-body__text--left\">The leader of Reform UK was speaking at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jIvu0MmjWHs\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jIvu0MmjWHs\">House Judiciary Committee hearing<\/a> on how the UK\u2019s Online Safety Act and the EU\u2019s Digital Services Act might affect Americans\u2019 free speech online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">At the same hearing, Irish barrister Lorcan Price told Congress it should \u201cput pressure\u201d on the Irish Government \u201cto stop the bullying of tech companies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">In his opening statement, Farage said the UK had sunk into an \u201cawful authoritarian situation\u201d, citing the cases of Linehan and Lucy Connolly, the wife of a Conservative councillor who was jailed last year after calling for hotels accommodating asylum seekers to be set on fire. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Connolly (42) was released from prison in August after serving less than half of her 31-month sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  b-it-article-body__text--left\">Linehan (57) was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/uk\/2025\/09\/02\/father-ted-writer-graham-linehan-arrested-over-x-posts-on-trans-issues\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/uk\/2025\/09\/02\/father-ted-writer-graham-linehan-arrested-over-x-posts-on-trans-issues\/\">arrested on Monday at Heathrow Airport over three posts he had made on X about trans issues.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  b-it-article-body__text--left\">Neither Connolly nor Linehan were arrested under the Online Safety Act, instead the Public Order Act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Of Linehan\u2019s arrest, Farage said: \u201cAt what point did we become North Korea? Well, I think the Irish comedy writer found that out two days ago at Heathrow Airport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The Father Ted writer has said he was stopped by five armed officers at Heathrow Airport over three posts and taken into a cell to be questioned over messages he posted on X, formerly Twitter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">One of the posts said: \u201cIf a trans-identified male is in a female-only space, he is committing a violent, abusive act. Make a scene, call the cops and if all else fails, punch him in the balls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Mr Price acts as legal counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom International, a US Christian organisation that takes conservative positions on civil rights issues in several countries. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  b-it-article-body__text--left\">The barrister, who is based in Strasbourg, outlined his concerns about the legislation. He told the committee, \u201ca lot of regulation is actually happening in my own country, in Ireland\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Mr Price said Coimisi\u00fan na Me\u00e1n, the Irish media commissioner, is \u201cground zero for a lot of this regulation\u201d. He also noted that many tech companies have their European headquarters in Dublin. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Mr Price said the US \u201ccan do a lot\u201d about the regulation because of the \u201cstrong bilateral relationships between Ireland and the United States\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">He called on the US \u201cto put pressure on the Irish government to stop the bullying of tech companies\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">\u201cX is in the Irish Supreme Court soon against the Irish media Commissioner, so they\u2019re already starting to crack down. So I would hope that you use your good offices here to put pressure on the Irish,\u201d said Mr Price.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The Irish Times has contacted Coimisi\u00fan na Me\u00e1n for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  b-it-article-body__text--left\">Earlier on Wednesday, the head of the British police force that arrested Linehan said his officers are in \u201can impossible position\u201d when dealing with statements made online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Metropolitan Police commissioner Mark Rowley said his officers should not be \u201cpolicing toxic culture wars debates\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">He said he has made suggestions to the British government about how laws governing social media posts could be changed, and is ready to test new approaches \u201cwithin a matter of weeks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">British prime minister Keir Starmer told the House of Commons on Wednesday that he believed the police should be able to focus on the most consequential issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">\u201cThe commissioner has put out a statement in relation to the particular case this morning.
