\n\tChanning Tatum<\/a> is finally a member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after debuting as Gambit in \u201cDeadpool and Wolverine,\u201d but it turns out he tried to enter the mega-franchise years earlier as Thor<\/a>. In his latest Variety cover story<\/a>, Tatum opened up about bombing his audition to play the God of Thunder in Kenneth Branagh\u2019s 2011 superhero movie.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI didn\u2019t really want to be Thor,\u201d Tatum admitted. \u201cBut I wanted to audition in front of Kenneth Branagh.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe audition itself did not go well. As Tatum explained: \u201cAfter I did one take, [Branagh] was like, \u2018You\u2019re not allowed to move. Put your hands on this chair.\u2019 And I froze. He nailed my crutch. I spent the next five years really trying to learn stillness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tChris Hemsworth would ultimately win the part of Thor, with Tatum later moving on to develop a Gambit movie at 20th Century Fox as part of the studio\u2019s \u201cX-Men\u201d franchise. Gambit was always Tatum\u2019s passion when it came to superheroes. The movie had multiple fits and starts over the years. It was once dated <\/a>for an October 2016 release before a script overhaul delayed the project. Variety\u00a0reported in November 2017\u00a0<\/a>that Lizzie Caplan had boarded the movie as the female lead. It still never got off the ground and ultimately collapsed when Disney bought Fox.<\/p>\n

\n\tTatum told\u00a0Variety<\/a>\u00a0in 2022 that he ended up \u201ctraumatized\u201d after spending years trying to make a Gambit movie only for the project to be axed, adding: \u201cI shut off my Marvel machine. I haven\u2019t been able to see any of the movies. I loved that character. It was just too sad. It was like losing a friend because I was so ready to play him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFortunately for Tatum, he\u00a0finally got the chance to play Gambit on the big screen thanks to his surprise role in last year\u2019s Marvel blockbuster \u201cDeadpool and Wolverine.\u201d Tatum took to social media amid the film\u2019s release to\u00a0share an emotional statement<\/a>\u00a0on finally getting the chance to play Gambit.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI thought I had lost Gambit forever. But [Reynolds] fought for me and Gambit,\u201d he wrote at the time. \u201cI will owe him probably forever. Cause I\u2019m not sure how I could ever do something that would be equal to what this has meant to me. I love ya buddy. \u2026 I\u2019m so grateful to be in this movie. It\u2019s a masterpiece in my opinion. And just pure bad ass joy. I was literally screaming in the theater.\u201d<\/p>\n
