{"id":432632,"date":"2026-04-13T01:05:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T01:05:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/432632\/"},"modified":"2026-04-13T01:05:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T01:05:08","slug":"there-is-going-to-be-an-impact-inflation-fears-mount-over-planned-limerick-road-works","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/432632\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018There is going to be an impact\u2019 \u2013 Inflation fears mount over planned Limerick road works"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"320\" data-end=\"483\">AMID the ongoing fuel cost crisis and rising construction inflation, fears have been raised that road works projects in Limerick could be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/section\/131\/news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">significantly impacted.<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"265\" data-end=\"533\">Councillors and council officials expressed concern at the April meeting of the Newcastle West Municipal District over how rising costs and persistent bad weather could affect the condition of the district\u2019s roads.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"535\" data-end=\"818\">During a discussion on the schedule of Municipal District works for the year, Senior Executive Engineer Ben Noonan said that \u201cmonies have been allocated for restoration improvement and restoration maintenance,\u201d but warned that rising costs could still impact some planned projects.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"485\" data-end=\"726\"><strong data-start=\"728\" data-end=\"742\">Read next:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/on-the-road\/2057698\/limerick-motorists-to-face-further-disruption-as-day-three-of-fuel-protests-begin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Limerick motorists to face further disruption as day three of fuel protests begin<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"956\" data-end=\"1192\">He added that the Municipal District secured additional funding from the Chamber following representations from councillors for patching works, including pothole repairs, as well as \u20ac95,000 from the general MD budget allocated to roads.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1408\">The works were welcomed by Cathaoirleach of the district, Michael Collins, who said there was a good \u201cgeographical\u201d spread across the projects, commending engineers and describing the schedule as a \u201cbalancing act\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1410\" data-end=\"1596\">Cllr Tom Ruddle echoed Cllr Collins\u2019 comments, but raised concerns about funding levels compared to previous years, noting that \u201cinflation, you know, has gone up a lot\u201d in recent months.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1598\" data-end=\"1759\">Mr Noonan said the budget for works such as drainage has remained \u201cvery much the same\u201d as last year, with an additional \u20ac100,000 allocated in the revenue budget.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1761\" data-end=\"1979\">However, he warned that \u201cthere is going to be an impact\u201d, adding that his team \u201chave received emails in the last week or so from suppliers that tar macadam rates, pipe rates, concrete rates \u2014 everything is increasing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1981\" data-end=\"2095\">He said there is \u201cno doubt that we will have to review the extent of the works based on those inflationary rates\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2097\" data-end=\"2279\">Councillor Francis Foley said \u201cthe roads have gone bad enough due to weather\u201d, but added that the Municipal District has \u201calways had a good record when it comes to the road network\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2281\" data-end=\"2499\">Fine Gael councillor John Sheahan said that \u201cinflation is catching us big time now in relation to getting works done\u201d, adding that rising costs mean it \u201cwouldn\u2019t be long knocking a few kilometres off the list we have\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>ADVERTISEMENT &#8211;
