{"id":43306,"date":"2025-09-04T14:54:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T14:54:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/43306\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T14:54:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T14:54:09","slug":"man-appears-in-court-following-attempted-car-jacking-in-letterkenny","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/43306\/","title":{"rendered":"Man appears in court following attempted car-jacking in Letterkenny"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A man has appeared in court following the alleged attempted hijacking of a vehicle in Letterkenny.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Father-of-two Martin McCarthy appeared at Letterkenny District Court today.<\/p>\n<p>The 36-year-old is charged with both a public order offence and also criminal damage following an incident at Lower Main Street in Letterkenny on the afternoon of August 20th last.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy\u2019s arrest followed an incident which was shared widely on social media which showed three men trying to gain access to a car.<\/p>\n<p>The driver of the car is then sen mounting the pavement before hitting a litter bin and then driving off at speed.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy, with an address at Ballymacool Woods in Letterkenny, was brought to court by detectives having been arrested yesterday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Letterkenny-footpath-car.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-cGVuY2ktZ2FsbGVyeS1pbWFnZS1jb250ZW50\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-605388\" class=\"size-full wp-image-605388\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Letterkenny-footpath-car.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"419\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-605388\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The car mounting the pavement in Letterkenny during the incident. Pic by Donegal Daily.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Sergeant Gerry Farry said he had strong objections to bail in the case.<\/p>\n<p>He said he believed that as well as the seriousness of the case, he believed McCarthy may interfere with witnesses in the case.<\/p>\n<p>He outlined the background to the incident which he said was connected with a family feud.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Farry told how McCarthy was identified at the scene after the hood on his coat fell down during the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Between \u00a33,000 and \u00a34,000 (Sterling) of damage had been caused to the car during the incident, the court was also told.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Farry added that between what occurred on August 20th and what Gardai believe could occur, Gardai had no option but to step in and make a bail objection.<\/p>\n<p>However, solicitor for the accused, Mr Rory O\u2019Brien said his client was entitled to the presumption of innocence.<\/p>\n<p>He said there was a strong degree of cooperation from his client and that since this alleged incident happened almost two weeks ago, his client had not tried to flee the country.<\/p>\n<p>He added that McCarthy had no difficulty in abiding with any conditions that the court may impose and stressed that \u201cthere are two sides to this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having considered the matter of bail, Judge Paul Kelly said he was refusing bail.<\/p>\n<p>The reasons for this was the nature of the charges and also the possibility of interference with others as had been suggested in Detective Farry\u2019s evidence.<\/p>\n<p>He noted there was also a serious ongoing issue between the accused and other individuals and that McCarthy was caught \u201cred handed\u201d at the scene of this incident.<\/p>\n<p>The case was adjourned to Monday, September 15th.<\/p>\n<p>Man appears in court following attempted car-jacking in Letterkenny was last modified:  September 4th, 2025 by Staff Writer<\/p>\n<p>      Tags:<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A man has appeared in court following the alleged attempted hijacking of a vehicle in Letterkenny.
