But the 2024 ousting of Bangladesh\u2019s autocratic Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7334387\/sheikh-hasina-bangladesh-prime-minister-sentenced-to-death\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sheikh Hasina<\/a> propelled the 57-year-old scion from opposition agitator to national leader in\u202fwaiting\u2014a destiny he fulfilled in February by winning an electoral landslide after 17 years estranged from his homeland.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">It was a victory that meant Rahman had followed in the footsteps of his mother Khaleda Zia, who was Bangladesh\u2019s first female Prime Minister and who passed away just five days after his return to Dhaka. His grief was still raw when <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7358216\/bangladesh-elections-tarique-rahman-profile\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rahman sat down with TIME in January<\/a>, though he vowed to channel it into unifying his country of 175 million, while getting South Asia\u2019s second biggest economy buzzing again. Bangladesh is beset by high inflation and youth unemployment, and relations with regional superpower India have reached a historic nadir. All require swift remedy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Corruption allegations from the aughts (albeit since quashed by the courts) may mean any honeymoon period will be shorter than most.
