{"id":43798,"date":"2025-09-04T19:47:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T19:47:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/43798\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T19:47:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T19:47:07","slug":"final-maternity-hospital-due-to-switch-entirely-to-electronic-records-by-end-of-year-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/43798\/","title":{"rendered":"Final maternity hospital due to switch entirely to electronic records by end of year \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">All maternity hospitals in the State will have electronic health records by the end of the year, the head of technology at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hse\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hse\/\">Health Service Executive<\/a> (HSE) has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Damien McCallion, chief technology and transformation officer, said five of the six maternity hospitals currently have electronic records, which are seen as a key part of healthcare system reforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Electronic records, when fully implemented, will improve patient care and reduce paperwork for staff, allowing them to commit more time caring for patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr McCallion said just one hospital \u2013 the Coombe in Dublin \u2013 has yet to be transferred to electronic records, but this will be done this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said this allows maternity and gynaecology patients in these hospitals to be alerted and have reminders for their appointments on the HSE app.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">More than 100,000 people are now using the app, the first version of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2025\/02\/25\/hse-launches-app-for-patients-to-manage-care-online\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2025\/02\/25\/hse-launches-app-for-patients-to-manage-care-online\/\">which was launched in February<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">It currently includes medical cards and European health insurance cards, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/covid\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/covid\/\">Covid<\/a> and flu vaccination records, signposting to services and self-care supports, and enables patients to have a list of their current medications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The second phase of the app is due to be launched this month, which will allow patients view all outpatient hospital appointment types.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cWe won\u2019t have all hospitals initially,&#8221; said Mr McCallion. \u201cSome of our hospitals are really old systems, so some of those are going to take into 2026 to get on to the app, but we\u2019ll gradually have all of the hospital appointments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere\u2019s over a million appointments that will go live on the app when we press the \u2018go\u2019 button on the next version; our aim is to keep developing capability as we get better systems behind it. We\u2019ll also have breast screening appointments going out on the app.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The next phase will be about giving information to patients.
