Two swift, land-dwelling predators\u2014about the size of modern jackals\u2014perished side-by-side in a sudden catastrophic surge, leaving their skeletons locked in the earth as the world moved on.<\/p>\n<p>Millions of years later, human hands dug up the now fossilized remains. For 75 years, these two skeletons sat in the basement of Yale\u2019s Peabody Museum, assumed to belong to the same early crocodylomorph species. <\/p>\n<p>But high-resolution CT scans have just revealed that at least one of the fossils belongs to an entirely new, short-snouted croc genus with a reinforced skull and a powerful bite. Researchers named the new species Eosphorosuchus lacrimosa. The new species suggests that long before crocodiles took to the water, their terrestrial relatives were already showing signs of ecological specialization and likely partitioning prey resources during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/feature-post\/natural-sciences\/geology-and-paleontology\/dinosaurs\/triassic-dinosaurs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Triassic<\/a> period.<\/p>\n<p>Different \u2018Jackal\u2019 Crocs<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.zmescience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/fig1.avif\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"901\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-302485 perfmatters-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/fig1-1024x901.jpg\"  data-\/><\/a>Photographs and anatomical drawings of the skull of\u00a0E. lacrimosa,\u00a0viewed from the right\/bottom (a, c) and the top\/left (b, d).\u00a0Credit: Miranda Margulis-Ohnuma<\/p>\n<p>Paleontologists first pulled the massive blocks of rock from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ghost_Ranch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ghost Ranch <\/a>bone bed in 1948. The site is known for its well-preserved fossils, being regarded as a sort of ancient graveyard of early dinosaurs, fish, and lizard relatives.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers initially categorized the two predator skeletons buried there as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hesperosuchus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hesperosuchus agilis<\/a>. At the time, early crocodile relatives were understood to be terrestrial, fast-running animals, unlike their semiaquatic relatives of today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring this period, the late Triassic, there were two reptile dynasties vying for dominance: the line that would produce crocodiles and alligators on one side, and that which would produce birds, which of course are dinosaurs, on the other,\u201d Bhart-Anjan Bhullar, associate professor at Yale University and senior author of the study, said in a university press release. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dinosaurs at this time were slim, delicate animals that walked on two slender legs almost like herons, and the crocodiles were fast-running, four-legged predators, low-slung and more heavily built\u2014analogous to a jackal, a big fox, or a dog.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet something about the Yale museum specimen nagged at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u00d7<\/p>\n<p>                        Thank you! Credit: Miranda Margulis-Ohnuma<\/p>\n<p>To test that hunch, the Yale team needed to peer inside the solid rock without destroying the delicate fossils. Miranda Margulis-Ohnuma, a Ph.D. student and the study\u2019s lead author, turned to a powerful CT scanner. Slicing through the stone with continuous X-rays, she digitally \u201cdisassembled\u201d the crushed skeleton bone by bone. The hidden anatomy confirmed their suspicions: this was a creature vastly different from its long-snouted companion.<\/p>\n<p>The team named the new animal Eosphorosuchus lacrimosa. The genus name combines the Greek words \u201cEosphorus,\u201d the dawn-bringer, with \u201csoukhos,\u201d crocodile, while \u201clacrimosa\u201d highlights the animal\u2019s distinctive lacrimal skull bone near its eyes. The authors specifically tie the name Eosphoros as a counterpart to Hesperos\u2014H. agilis meaning the \u2018Dusk crocodile\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEosphorosuchus is one of only a handful of well-preserved early crocodile relatives, and its coexistence with Hesperosuchus represents the \u2018dawn\u2019 of functional diversification in the lineage that would give rise to modern crocodiles,\u201d Margulis-Ohnuma said in the Yale statement.<\/p>\n<p>The scans uncovered a remarkably short snout and a reinforced skull. The animal featured a large, triangular postorbital bone behind the eye and a prominent ridge on its lower jaw. In life, these thick bones anchored massive jaw muscles\u2014specifically the adductor mandibulae externus superficialis\u2014suggesting the predator had a powerful bite force.<\/p>\n<p>The creature\u2019s fossilized foot even bore a healed wound containing an embedded tooth fragment, hinting at a violent encounter earlier in its life.<\/p>\n<p>Triassic Coexistence<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.zmescience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/fig3.avif\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"732\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-302486 perfmatters-lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.3989454809375401;width:1025px;height:auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/fig3-1024x732.jpg\"  data-\/><\/a>Left hindlimb of\u00a0E. lacrimosa: pelvis (a), leg bones (b), ankle (c), and foot (d). Credit: Miranda Margulis-Ohnuma<\/p>\n<p>The sheer physical power of E. lacrimosa suggests it may have been adapted to tackle relatively larger or less agile prey. Just about 5 meters away (15 feet) lay the remains of H. agilis, which likely used its longer snout to snap up smaller, more agile targets. Finding two distinct predators in the same muddy grave suggests that these early crocodile cousins were already splitting up the food web, specializing to avoid direct competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a time-slice of a single moment 210 million years ago,\u201d Bhullar stated. \u201cThese two individuals had to compete and interact with each other. They were quite possibly looking at each other when they died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Such discoveries are incredibly rare. The early branches of the crocodile family tree remain sparsely populated in the fossil record, leaving researchers hungry for more data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first really strong evidence we have of coexistence between two functionally different-looking crocodylomorphs,\u201d Margulis-Ohnuma told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/animals\/extinct-species\/triassic-croc-relative-from-ghost-ranch-new-mexico-finally-identified-after-nearly-80-years-in-museum-basement\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Live Science<\/a>. \u201cFor early crocs, we\u2019re very data deficient, so every new fossil that comes out is changing the story.
