\n\tScott Spiegel<\/a>, \u201cEvil Dead II<\/a>,\u201d \u201cThe Rookie\u201d co-writer and executive producer of the \u201cHostel<\/a>\u201d franchise, died on Sept. 1.\u00a0He was 67.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpiegel was a frequent collaborator with filmmakers Sam Raimi, Boaz Yakin, Eli Roth and Quentin Tarantino. After co-writing \u201cEvil Dead II,\u201d which premiered in 1987, Spiegel went on to direct his first feature, \u201cIntruder,\u201d in 1989.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpiegel also co-wrote the 1990 film \u201cThe Rookie\u201d with Yakin that starred Clint Eastwood. His other film credits include executive producing the \u201cHostel\u201d horror franchise with Roth, directing \u201cHostel: Part III\u201d and the 2004 reimagining of \u201cMy Name Is Modesty.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAdditionally, he made cameo appearances in Raimi\u2019s \u201cSpider-Man\u201d (2002), \u201cSpider-Man 2\u201d (2004) and Drag Me to Hell (2009). He also lent his voice for an appearance in \u201cDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness\u201d (2022).<\/p>\n

\n\tA Michigan native, Spiegel was a fan of cinema since childhood. He began making films in middle and high school with his friends and frequent collaborators like Raimi, actor Bruce Campbell, producer and director John Cameron and director Josh Becker.<\/p>\n

\n\tRaimi paid tribute to his longtime friend, recalling their time spent together making films at an early age.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe moment the teacher was out of the room, Scott would stand up and precisely imitate their voice and mannerisms, cracking up the class,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cMore than anything, he wanted to make people laugh. And he was so good at doing it. Even as a kid, he was always working to provide a good life for his family. I remember that every Saturday, before shooting a Super 8 together, he first had to finish his work at Walnut Lake market, stocking shelves to pay his family\u2019s bills.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the early 1990s, he introduced producer Lawrence Bender to Tarantino, who helped get Tarantino\u2019s \u201cReservoir Dogs\u201d made.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a statement, Roth talked about his experience working with Spiegel on the \u201cHostel\u201d franchise and as co-founder of their Raw Nerve production company. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cScottie was one of the funniest, warmest, most generous people I ever had the good fortune to call a friend,\u201d he said. \u201cHe taught me so much about directing and was the best I\u2019ve ever met at coming up with visual gags and puns. So many directors talk about the \u2018Scotty Spiegel shot\u2019 or a \u2018Scotty edit\u2019 when you cut to a gag. Some of the most fun times of my life were spent at Scotty\u2019s apartment, which was also a museum of ancient candy and defunct cereal. I will miss him dearly and think of him every time I film a crazy P.O.V.\u201d<\/p>\n
