{"id":444011,"date":"2026-04-20T02:14:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T02:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/444011\/"},"modified":"2026-04-20T02:14:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T02:14:13","slug":"electricity-bills-could-increase-by-up-to-9-with-gas-even-higher-minister-says-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/444011\/","title":{"rendered":"Electricity bills could increase by up to 9% with gas even higher, Minister says \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">The Government is preparing for domestic electricity prices to increase by between 4 and 9 per cent with significantly higher rises expected for household gas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/energy-costs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/energy-costs\/\">bills<\/a>, Minister for Energy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/darragh-obrien\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/darragh-obrien\/\">Darragh O\u2019Brien<\/a> has said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">O\u2019Brien said the increases, which Government believes will begin between May and July, are linked to continuing pressures on global energy markets stemming from conflict in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Asked about the suggestion on Friday by Minister for Enterprise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/peter-burke\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/peter-burke\/\">Peter Burke<\/a> that price increases could reach as high as 30 per cent, O\u2019Brien said the  hikes would not be as high as that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cI\u2019m not contradicting what Peter said at all. It depends on which retailers have their own hedging arrangements. [For] electricity, we\u2019re not looking at increases in that sphere. It would be single-digit increases. We are looking at increases of between 4 to 9 per cent, depending on the provider.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cWith gas it\u2019s more than that, but not [as high] as 30 per cent,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Speaking on RT\u00c9\u2019s This Week, he said Government was planning for different scenarios and retained the capacity to introduce further supports if needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cEvery country in the world is grappling with supply. Thankfully, our supply here and our reserves are very robust, and again, we have regular information on that. In relation to supply, we\u2019re not ruling anything out at the moment. We\u2019ve only just brought in additional measures with a \u20ac750 million total package, one of the most significant in Europe,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Addressing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/04\/19\/holiday-makers-face-travel-disruption-with-aer-lingus-to-carry-out-maintenance-on-aircraft\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/04\/19\/holiday-makers-face-travel-disruption-with-aer-lingus-to-carry-out-maintenance-on-aircraft\/\">reports of about 500 cancelled flights<\/a> by Aer Lingus, O\u2019Brien said the issue was unrelated to fuel shortages but said there were price pressures on airlines because of increases in the cost of jet fuel. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cAer Lingus has planned maintenance and that has meant small changes to their schedule, about 2 per cent of their schedule,\u201d he said, adding people were being rebooked on flights on the same day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cWe\u2019re seeing increases in the price of jet fuel. So there are cost pressures there for airlines, and airlines will make commercial decisions, separate to Government. But what I\u2019m saying to people is our supplies and our reserves here in Ireland are very robust, with a 70-day reserve,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">On internal discussions within Fianna F\u00e1il regarding the leadership of Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin,  O\u2019Brien said he and most of his colleagues remained firmly supportive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cI\u2019ve been really clear on my position and the vast majority of my colleagues were fully supportive of the leadership of Miche\u00e1l Martin, and we need that experienced leadership now more than ever,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">He acknowledged pressures on Government TDs amid recent protests and disruption, but defended the party\u2019s overall approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cThis is probably the first very significant crisis that some of our first-time and newer TDs have seen &#8230; There has been a lot of pressure on TDs across the House, particularly those in Government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cWhat we saw over the last two weeks, I never want to see happen again in relation to the blockades, the disruption to supply chains, and some of the behaviours that we saw. Genuine protest is something that I will always defend, and my colleagues will always defend that, but blockades, no, they are different.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cWe are a democratic party. We allow people to have an opinion.
