A prominent former TNT Sports presenter has opened up about being struck down with a mysterious illness which left him in such severe pain he heartbreakingly told his wife, ‘I want to die.’<\/p>\n

Darrell Currie had been a regular on the broadcaster’s coverage of the Scottish Premiership, while also fronting Premier League<\/a> and Champions League<\/a> coverage.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But he’s been left unable to lead a live show for more than three years after suffering a downturn in his health while hosting TNT Sports’ coverage of Celtic<\/a> against Real Madrid<\/a> back in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 43-year-old experienced ‘what felt like an explosion in his brain’ which left him living in agonising, chronic pain.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Currie has now opened up about living with his illness and the moment he was left clinging onto his chair in the studio with Chris Sutton and Michael Owen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

‘It felt like a bomb went off in my head. It honestly was like an explosion inside my brain,’ he told Scotland Tonight.<\/p>\n

It was during TNT Sports’ coverage of Scotland versus Republic of Ireland in 2022 that the 43-year-old realised he couldn’t continue<\/p>\n

‘I remember, in the middle of a chat, sort of holding onto my chair. It felt like there had been an earthquake in the studio.’\u00a0<\/p>\n

The presenter managed to return to the hot seat a couple of weeks later to cover Scotland vs Republic of Ireland, but recalls feeling even worse that night.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘I knew it was too much,’ he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘I just thought, “I’m going to fall over, I’m going to black out. This is really bad.”<\/p>\n

‘A producer said to me, “I think you should go home.”<\/p>\n

‘I left the stadium and thought to myself, “It’s going to be a long time before I’m back.”‘<\/p>\n

Currie’s health worsened so severely to the point where he candidly told his wife he no longer wanted to battle through the pain.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘There were so many weird symptoms, including the dizziness and everything else, but it was like my body was completely broken,’ he continued.<\/p>\n

Currie experienced ‘what felt like an explosion’ in his head while covering Celtic versus Real Madrid in the Champions League<\/p>\n

‘There was almost no function. I was in bed for a couple of days. Probably at that time I though, “I could die here”, because they were giving me everything.”<\/p>\n

‘Doctors were sending medication, pain killers, the strongest stuff you can imagine. And nothing was helping at all, I thought, “This might be it.”<\/p>\n

‘You still think, “why me?” There would be many times I was lying in bed and saying to my wife, “I just want to die because it can’t be worth living on like this, I don’t want to be the burden.” Is it worth being alive if things were gonna get worse?’<\/p>\n

The presenter underwent a number of tests, including ones for Lyme disease, multiple sclerosis and arachnoiditis, but doctors for a long time failed to give him a proper diagnosis.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He’s now undergoing treatment in London, having had 20 MRIs before eventually being diagnosed with Lyme disease.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He added: ‘There was nothing that was really completing the story to say, “this is what\u2019s wrong with you”, and it was a medical merry-go-round.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘I could tell they had no idea what was wrong with me and they were just giving me medication. I would go back and eventually I would take them because\u2026 you trust, don\u2019t you?\u00a0<\/p>\n

Currie admits that he misses his colleagues, but is focused on maintaining good health for the sake of his family<\/p>\n

‘I got diagnosed with Lyme disease \u2013 chronic Lyme disease, I was told.\u00a0I dived into this treatment. I did six months of antibiotics and they were saying I had to go and do intravenous antibiotics off the back of that and the quotes were eyewatering.<\/p>\n

‘Tens of thousands of pounds\u2026 I couldn\u2019t keep on spending money. I was running out of money and you have to prioritise.’\u00a0<\/p>\n

While acknowledging that he misses his former colleagues on the television, Currie is now focused on maintaining good health for the sake of his family.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘I do miss the people and the broadcasting at times,’ he admitted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘I think at the start, when you get ill, you chase getting back to where you were, and I think this feeling of, \u2018I need to get back to where I was\u2019 is in your head a lot at the start when you\u2019re unwell.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘It\u2019s not healthy, so after about a year, I sort of lost the feeling of desperation to get back. It was more, “I need to live.
