{"id":449463,"date":"2026-04-23T07:04:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T07:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/449463\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T07:04:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T07:04:14","slug":"crime-rates-and-drug-deaths-in-dublins-southwest-inner-city-twice-the-national-average-report-finds-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/449463\/","title":{"rendered":"Crime rates and drug deaths in Dublin\u2019s southwest inner city twice the national average, report finds \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Crime rates and drug deaths in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\">Dublin\u2019s <\/a>southwest inner city are twice the national average while fewer than 40 per cent of children in the area attend secondary school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">These are just some of the stark findings in a new report highlighting the social and economic realities faced by citizens living in one of the city\u2019s most deprived districts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The report by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/trinity-college-dublin-tcd\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/trinity-college-dublin-tcd\/\">Trinity College Dublin<\/a> economist Barra Roantree found the inner city area, which encompasses most of Dublin 8 and includes the historical Liberties area, was \u201cdisproportionately impacted\u201d by deprivation, crime, low education participation and a lack of physical activity underscored by a lack of sporting facilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The findings come as the Government this week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/04\/22\/new-dublin-regeneration-role-for-robert-watt-is-secondment-with-no-competitive-process\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/04\/22\/new-dublin-regeneration-role-for-robert-watt-is-secondment-with-no-competitive-process\/\">announced the appointment <\/a>of former civil servant Robert Watt as the city\u2019s new regeneration \u201ctsar\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Watt will head a special purpose vehicle  to improve security and living conditions in Dublin\u2019s inner city on foot of recommendations from the Dublin City Taskforce, established in the wake of the riots in November 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The southwest inner city, which includes the neighbourhoods of Dolphin\u2019s Barn, Rialto, Kilmainham and parts of Inchicore and Islandbridge, has a population of approximately 45,000 including more than 7,000 schoolchildren.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Despite making up just a quarter of Dublin\u2019s inner-city population, Roantree\u2019s report found the area accounted for almost half of those classified as living in \u201cextremely or very disadvantaged\u201d circumstances in the city. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It also found that fewer than four in 10 children living in the area go to secondary school, the lowest of any electoral area in Dublin or any urban area in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Third-level progression rates were less than half the national average with 36 per cent of students who sat the Leaving Certificate in 2024 going on to third level. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This was less than half the progression rate for Dublin (81 per cent) or the State overall (80 per cent).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cRaising progression rates to the national average would result in more than \u20ac3 million in extra lifetime earnings and \u20ac1.8 million in extra tax revenues for the 2024 cohort of Leaving Certificate students alone,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The research, which was commissioned by Sporting Liberties \u2013 an umbrella group of local sports clubs that has been campaigning to equip the area with better sporting facilities \u2013 found the number of drug poisoning deaths per capita in the area (there were 22 in 2021, the latest year available) was \u201cat least twice the national average\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The crime rate was also twice the national average with the Kevin Street An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na (AGS) District recording 106.7 crimes per 1,000 of population in 2024 compared to 40.4 nationally. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The high rate of crime imposed costs of approximately \u20ac60 million a year comprising \u20ac21 million in policing;
