{"id":452823,"date":"2026-04-25T06:41:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T06:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/452823\/"},"modified":"2026-04-25T06:41:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T06:41:11","slug":"jim-mcdowell-praised-as-one-of-bravest-reporters-of-the-troubles-dies-aged-76-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/452823\/","title":{"rendered":"Jim McDowell, praised as one of bravest reporters of The Troubles, dies aged 76 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Former northern editor of The Sunday World, Jim McDowell, who has died, has been praised as one of the bravest reporters of The Troubles. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/belfast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/belfast\/\">Belfast<\/a>-born McDowell, who started his career in the Belfast News Letter, was frequently threatened during a 50-year-long career for his coverage of paramilitaries on all sides of the conflict and the actions of drug dealers, who once beat him savagely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Aged 76, McDowell, who suffered heart trouble in later years, is survived by his wife Lindy, daughter Faye and sons Jamie and Micah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He campaigned for decades for justice for his murdered Sunday World colleague, Martin O\u2019Hagan, who was murdered by the Loyalist Volunteer Force in 2001.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Long-standing colleague Brian Rowan said McDowell was \u201ca legend\u201d during years when journalists were frequently threatened: \u201cHe stood his ground. He was hard as nails.
