{"id":455315,"date":"2026-04-26T22:43:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-26T22:43:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/455315\/"},"modified":"2026-04-26T22:43:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-26T22:43:18","slug":"minister-stays-away-from-conference-to-end-fossil-fuels-but-says-it-has-irelands-support-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/455315\/","title":{"rendered":"Minister stays away from conference to end fossil fuels but says it has Ireland\u2019s support \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland will have no Government Minister at the inaugural international conference aimed at ending fossil fuel use despite being one of the earliest signatories to the plan. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Conference on Transitioning Away From Fossil Fuels begins in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/colombia\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/colombia\/\">Colombia <\/a>on Friday but Minister for Climate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/darragh-obrien\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/darragh-obrien\/\">Darragh O\u2019Brien<\/a> will not attend. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland will be represented by three officials from his department instead. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A spokesman said Ireland was \u201cstrongly supportive\u201d of the conference and was \u201cproud\u201d to be one of 24 signatories to the Bel\u00e9m Declaration drawn up at the UN climate summit in Brazil last November to call for such an event. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOn this occasion, it was not possible for the Minister to attend the conference,\u201d the spokesman said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Despite his absence, climate campaigners have said the Government must use the occasion to show its commitment to the Bel\u00e9m Declaration. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe have yet to see Government policies and priorities translate such international commitments into necessary domestic action,\u201d said Sin\u00e9ad Loughran, climate justice policy adviser with Tr\u00f3caire, who is attending the conference in Santa Marta city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Delegations from 61 countries are taking part in what the organisers \u2013 Colombia and the Netherlands \u2013 have described as a \u201ccoalition of the willing\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It contrasts with UN climate summits, or Cops, which include all countries whether or not they are willing to forge ahead with moving away from fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2026\/03\/11\/united-states-israel-iran-oil-gas-fossil-fuels-cost-dependence-renewables\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Price of our dependence on fossil fuels is becoming clear yet againOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Cop agreements must be by consensus, which means only vague ambitions around fossil fuel phase-out have made it into formal documents. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Santa Marta conference aims to devise a practical roadmap for countries to follow in facing down powerful oil and gas lobbies, weaning their economies off fossil fuels and rapidly replacing them with renewables. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While renewable energy is increasing worldwide, it is not keeping pace with rising demand for energy which is still mostly supplied by oil and gas. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tr\u00f3caire is making seven demands of the Irish Government, with a commitment to step back from new fossil fuel infrastructure topping the list.
