{"id":45880,"date":"2025-09-05T19:30:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T19:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/45880\/"},"modified":"2025-09-05T19:30:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T19:30:07","slug":"michael-flatley-and-joanna-donnelly-both-pull-out-of-presidential-election-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/45880\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Flatley and Joanna Donnelly both pull out of presidential election race\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lord of the Dance star Michael Flatley and former RT\u00c9 weather forecaster Joanna Donnelly have both pulled out of the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/maintopics\/presidential-election_topic-5294218.html\">presidential election race<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr Flatley indicated several times that he would seek to enter the contest to replace President Michael D Higgins and a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/courtandcrime\/arid-41676194.html\">court was told in July<\/a> that he was returning to live in Ireland as he \u201cintends to seek nominations to run for President\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">As <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/arid-41663891.html\">first reported by the Irish Examiner<\/a>, informed sources indicated that the businessman was seriously considering a run.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He later told RT\u00c9\u2019s Brendan O\u2019Connor that he <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/politics\/arid-41672720.html\">had a \u201cteam of advisers\u201d<\/a> guiding him on the matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">However, in a statement on Instagram on Friday, Mr Flatley said he was prioritising his health over an election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI have decided not to run for president of Ireland at this time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI am honoured by the encouragement and support I&#8217;ve received from so many people across Ireland over recent weeks, but I must put my family and my health first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI feel I can better serve the Irish people by continuing my work promoting Ireland and Irish culture globally.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Meanwhile, former Met \u00c9ireann meteorologist Ms\u00a0 Donnelly admitted to being &#8220;unprepared for the undertaking&#8221; and &#8220;naive&#8221; to think she could meet the presidential election campaign&#8217;s challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ms Donnelly announced her bid to run on Tuesday, saying she had written to every council, adding that she felt worthy of the role.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">However, she said she did not know if she had the &#8220;savvy, or the political skills, or the campaign manager, or the PR, in order to show everybody else that I am worthy&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Taking to Instagram on Friday, Ms Donnelly said: &#8220;I have come to understand through conversations with people with vastly more experience in this type of campaign that I am unprepared for such an undertaking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;While I still believe that I have the qualities that would make me a good Uachtar\u00e1n na h\u00c9ireann, I was naive to think I could meet the challenges of the campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Therefore, at this stage, I\u2019ve decided it\u2019s best to withdraw my request for nominations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ms Donnelly thanked those who had sent her support and encouragement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">So far, only two people are on the ballot\u00a0\u2014 Fine Gael\u2019s Heather Humphreys and Independent TD Catherine Connolly, who has the support of Labour, the Social Democrats and People Before Profit. Fianna F\u00e1il are set to nominate either MEP Billy Kelleher or former Dublin Gaelic football manager Jim Gavin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Former taoiseach <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/politics\/arid-41699834.html\">Bertie Ahern will not seek a nomination<\/a> due to a lack of support within Fianna F\u00e1\u00edl&#8217;s leadership.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Sinn F\u00e9in is yet to put a candidate forward.
