{"id":459242,"date":"2026-04-29T07:04:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T07:04:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/459242\/"},"modified":"2026-04-29T07:04:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T07:04:15","slug":"spanish-authorities-freeze-gerry-hutchs-property-assets-as-part-of-money-laundering-investigation-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/459242\/","title":{"rendered":"Spanish authorities freeze Gerry Hutch\u2019s property assets as part of money-laundering investigation \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/spain\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/spain\/\">Spanish<\/a> authorities have frozen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gerry-hutch\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gerry-hutch\/\">Gerry Hutch<\/a>\u2019s property assets in the country as part of an ongoing money-laundering investigation into the gangland figure, who plans to run in a byelection in Dublin next month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2026\/04\/29\/gerry-hutchs-life-in-lanzarote-ive-had-heat-on-me-all-my-life\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2026\/04\/29\/gerry-hutchs-life-in-lanzarote-ive-had-heat-on-me-all-my-life\/\">The revelation<\/a> comes as Hutch refused to detail the extent of his property holdings in advance of the May 22nd <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-central-constituency\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-central-constituency\/\">Dublin Central<\/a> byelection, which he said he plans to enter as an Independent candidate.. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Hutch, who has made millions of euro over the years from property investments, told The Irish Times that he would only disclose his assets if elected, though he suggested he may be the wealthiest TD in the D\u00e1il if he wins a seat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Since 2015, Hutch (63) has lived almost full time on the Spanish island of Lanzarote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Documents obtained by The Irish Times show Hutch owns three properties in Spain, including a three-bedroom villa in the town of Puerto Del Carmen in Lanzarote where he spends eight months of the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The house, which sits on a 147sq m plot, also has access to a 424sq m \u201cprivate garden\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He purchased the property with his wife with  a mortgage of \u20ac264,000 in 2017 at the height of the feud between the Hutch organised crime group, a gang which the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/special-criminal-court\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/special-criminal-court\/\">Special Criminal Court<\/a> said he leads, and its rival, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kinahan-cartel\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kinahan-cartel\/\">Kinahan organised crime cartel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gerry Hutch\u2019s assets: On the trail of a Dublin gang leader turned politician<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Gerry Hutch in Lanzarote where he lives for most of the year. In an interview, the veteran criminal talks about his \u2018exaggerated\u2019 property holdings, hope of becoming the \u2018richest\u2019 TD and confidence of being exonerated in a Spanish criminal investigation. The orders are linked to a money-laundering investigation targeting Hutch and nine others, including his son Jason Jamie Murphy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2026\/04\/23\/case-against-daniel-kinahan-to-include-attempted-gerry-hutch-killing-and-feud-murders\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Attempted murder of Gerry Hutch to be included in case against Daniel KinahanOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The orders prevent Hutch from selling the properties until the case against him concludes. If he is convicted, part or all of his holdings could be seized by the Spanish courts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is not clear if the money-laundering investigation will proceed to a full trial. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Hutch spent about two weeks in custody in Lanzarote before being released on bail and permitted to return to Ireland to contest the 2024 general election. Last February his \u20ac100,000 bail deposit was returned to him by the courts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In March, Spanish prosecutors returned to the court and asked the judge to revoke the order sending Hutch for trial. The court complied and ordered that the case be returned to the investigation stage to allow prosecutors to gather more evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The reversal in sending Hutch for trial and the return of the bail money are strong indicators the case against him will not proceed, according to Spanish sources. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The investigation centres on allegations Hutch provided money-laundering services to a group of alleged scammers who defrauded UK residents by convincing them to invest portions of their pensions. Photograph: Enda O&#8217;Dowd <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In Ireland, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/garda-siochana\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/garda-siochana\/\">garda\u00ed<\/a> have completed a separate investigation into allegations Hutch was in control of a criminal organisation. The Director of Public Prosecutions is  considering  whether he should face formal charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In an interview with The Irish Times in Lanzarote, Hutch said he was unconcerned about the criminal investigations and  expected to be exonerated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said he was \u201cnot really\u201d involved in the property business any more and that the extent of his holdings had been \u201cexaggerated\u201d. He declined to detail how much property he  owns, but said he would disclose this information if elected to the D\u00e1il.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI think that\u2019s private.
