SWNS<\/p>\n<p>The survey of 5,000 people was conducted by Talker Research on behalf of Trust &amp; Will. SWNS<\/p>\n<p>And the levels of preparation don\u2019t always correlate with age. Sandwiched between aging parents and their own kids, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/10\/health\/rare-cancer-diagnoses-surge-dramatically-among-millennials-gen-x\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gen X<\/a> is actually the least protected generation in America.<\/p>\n<p>Defined as \u201cThe Sandwich Gap,\u201d 62% of Gen X said they have zero estate planning documents, leaving them more unprotected than <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/27\/lifestyle\/everything-our-gen-z-writers-use-to-fight-against-brain-rot\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gen Z<\/a> (54%), <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/18\/lifestyle\/reading-retreats-are-trending-with-millennials-and-gen-zs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Millennials<\/a> (58%) or <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/15\/real-estate\/first-time-home-buying-plunges-to-record-low\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Baby Boomers<\/a> (48%).<\/p>\n<p>Trust &amp; Will\u2019s 2026 Estate Planning Report is a part of an ongoing yearly analysis into estate planning in America and how preparation and thinking around legacies is changing.<\/p>\n<p>Results from the story showed that, while the majority of adults (73%) say estate planning is important to them, just 26% actually have a will in place. SWNS<\/p>\n<p>Defined as \u201cThe Sandwich Gap,\u201d 62% of Gen X said they have zero estate planning documents, leaving them more unprotected than Gen Z (54%), Millennials (58%) or Baby Boomers (48%). JackF \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>The lack of preparation has practical implications: 42% of Americans say they wouldn\u2019t know what to do if a family member died today. That figure jumps to 56% among those with no documents at all.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps most surprising is who else is flying without a safety net as 68% of people in serious or engaged relationships have no estate planning documents. Surprisingly, that\u2019s a higher unprotected rate than <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/30\/lifestyle\/summer-is-the-season-of-divorce\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">divorced<\/a>, separated or widowed Americans (55%).<\/p>\n<p>The top reason Americans give for not having a plan is believing they don\u2019t have enough assets (27%), while <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/12\/health\/bedtime-procrastination-is-stealing-hundreds-of-hours-of-americans-sleep-survey\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">procrastination<\/a> and simply not getting around to it have contributed to delays for 23%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s often thought that the older generations are those that need to act but it\u2019s so important that those in their forties and fifties can be enabled to properly protect their legacy and loved ones,\u201d Barbo said. SWNS<\/p>\n<p>Intimidating factors like simply not knowing where to start (17%), fearing the expense (15%) or finding the entire process too complicated (12%) were other common barriers.<\/p>\n<p>Understandably, many (8%) said not wanting to have uncomfortable conversations was a big part of their not yet having a will or trust in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Barbo added, \u201cThe number one reason people give for not having an estate plan is that they don\u2019t think they have enough assets. <\/p>\n<p>Intimidating factors like simply not knowing where to start (17%), fearing the expense (15%) or finding the entire process too complicated (12%) were other common barriers.
