A new rumor about Apple\u2019s MagSafe could be bad news for Qi2\u2019s future prospects on Android.<\/p>\n<p>As spotted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2026\/04\/29\/apple-questioning-iphone-magsafe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">MacRumors<\/a>, leaker <a href=\"https:\/\/weibo.com\/5143897135\/5292368381346169\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Instant Digital<\/a> has claimed on Weibo that there\u2019s internal debate at Apple as to whether MagSafe should be a standard feature in future iPhones. Apple changing tack and pulling MagSafe from at least some of its iPhones would probably mean fewer Android models shipping with MagSafe-compatible Qi2 hardware, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t want to miss the best from Android Authority?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/andauth.co\/AAGooglePreferredSource\" class=\"e_hm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\"><img class=\"e_Kg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"  title=\"google preferred source badge light@2x\"  alt=\"google preferred source badge light@2x\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776162012_219_google_preferred_source_badge_light@2x.png\"\/><img class=\"e_Kg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"  title=\"google preferred source badge dark@2x\"  alt=\"google preferred source badge dark@2x\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776162013_419_google_preferred_source_badge_dark@2x.png\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s impossible to know how serious the purported internal discussions about MagSafe\u2019s future are, assuming they\u2019re happening at all. The standard feature phrasing is ambiguous, too: Are features that ship in iPhone Pro models but not base-model iPhones standard? (That we\u2019re working from a machine-translated version of Instant Digital\u2019s post doesn\u2019t make things any clearer, either.)<\/p>\n<p>MacRumors points <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2026\/04\/20\/apple-downgrading-iphone-18-to-cut-costs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">another recent rumor<\/a> (again from Instant Digital) that Apple is eyeing potential year-over-year downgrades in the base-model iPhone 18 to cut manufacturing costs. It\u2019s feasible that built-in MagSafe could be one of those downgrades; Apple could point its non-Pro customers to MagSafe-enabling cases, instead.<\/p>\n<p>It could also be that a future potential iPhone 18e skips MagSafe (the 17e has it; the 16e does not). It feels less likely that Apple would give up on MagSafe altogether, given how hard it\u2019s leaned into that accessory ecosystem in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Qi2 is its own standard independent of Apple, so MagSafe doesn\u2019t have any bearing on Qi2 directly. At the same time, any new iPhone model shipping without MagSafe built in would give Android manufacturers a good excuse not to offer Qi2 in their similarly priced phones. In any case, at this stage, it\u2019s probably a little early to worry about it.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you for being part of our community.
