During an interview on the Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes\u2019 \u201cSmartLess\u201d podcast set to air next Monday,<\/a> the \u201cWeekend Update\u201d anchor said he couldn\u2019t stop thinking about buying the vessel after realizing it was the same ship he used to ride from his childhood home to the prestigious private high school he attended in Manhattan.<\/p>\n

When Jost learned the 6-decade-old ferry would be sent to the scrap yard if it wasn\u2019t sold at auction, he reached out to another Staten Island boy: his former \u201cSNL<\/a>\u201d colleague Pete Davidson.<\/a><\/p>\n

Jost, who openly admitted Davidson was probably the \u201cwrong person to text with when you have an idea like this,\u201d remembered receiving a resounding \u201cFuck yeah\u201d after telling the \u201cKing of Staten Island\u201d star his plan.<\/p>\n

Although the boat didn\u2019t have working engines, it still appeared to be a hot commodity. Jost, Davidson and investment partner Ron Castellano ended up in a bidding war with an anonymous rival before winning it at auction<\/a> with a last-minute $280,100 offer.<\/p>\n

As the proud co-owner of a 2,100-ton vessel that doesn\u2019t run, Jost decided to tell his dad, a retired high school teacher, about the purchase.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe literally was like, \u2018Did you do your homework?\u2019 Which is such a teacher thing to say,\u201d Jost said. \u201cI was like, \u2018Dad, I\u2019m just sort of texting you as a formality. I already bought the boat.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Next, Jost contacted his wife about the acquisition.<\/p>\n

\u2033\u2018Guess what? We own a ferry now,\u2019\u201d Jost remembered texting. \u201cAnd she was like, \u2018We?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

While Jost once joked that the ferry was the \u201cdumbest and least thought-through purchase\u201d he\u2019d ever made, he told the podcast\u2019s hosts that at the time, he viewed it like a real estate investment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you put it somewhere, it\u2019s 70,000 square feet. So I was like, \u2019If you put that on a dock in Manhattan, you\u2019ve suddenly got basically a building on the waterfront,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Nearly four years later, Jost and company are still figuring out how to turn the dead-in-the-water ferry into a floating event space due to the \u201clong process\u201d of obtaining permits, securing parking and meeting environmental regulations.<\/p>\n
