{"id":461148,"date":"2026-04-30T09:19:19","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T09:19:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/461148\/"},"modified":"2026-04-30T09:19:19","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T09:19:19","slug":"find-out-if-you-qualify-for-google-plays-5-million-class-action-settlement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/461148\/","title":{"rendered":"Find Out If You Qualify for Google Play&#8217;s $5 Million Class Action Settlement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Millions of Google users could soon receive part of a $5 million class-action settlement alleging the company automatically renewed Google Play subscriptions without properly notifying customers, a violation of <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/codes_displayText.xhtml?lawCode=BPC&amp;division=7.&amp;title=&amp;part=3.&amp;chapter=1.&amp;article=9.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">California&#8217;s Automatic Renewal law<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>As a result, users were reportedly charged without their knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>The Google Play Store is the digital distribution service for Android and ChromeOS devices, allowing users to download apps, games, books, music, TV shows, movies and more.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/playstoresubscriptionsettlement.com\/media\/6715435\/first_amended_complaint_filed_copy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">In filings<\/a>, class members alleged Google failed to explain its Google Play subscription policy &#8220;in a clear and conspicuous manner.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Moreover, class members complained to Google that they did not know their subscriptions would be automatically renewed, yet Google did nothing to correct those business practices,&#8221; the complaint continued.<\/p>\n<p>While Google did not admit any wrongdoing, it agreed to the seven-figure settlement, which received\u00a0preliminary approval\u00a0on January 22, 2026. (Google did not respond to CNBC Select&#8217;s request for a comment.)<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what to know about the Google Play settlement and how to avoid getting trapped paying for digital subscriptions you no longer use.<\/p>\n<p>Find a subscription app to keep tabs on your recurring chargesGoogle Play class action settlement<a id=\"headline0\"\/>Who is eligible for the Google Play settlement?<\/p>\n<p>California residents are eligible for the Google settlement if they paid for at least one subscription renewal through a Google Play checkout screen between May 30, 2014, and October 27, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Residents who canceled their subscriptions during a free trial are excluded, as are those with Google Drive subscriptions and users whose subscriptions were fully refunded by Google.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline1\"\/>How do I file a claim?<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.playstoresubscriptionsettlement.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">settlement website<\/a>, eligible class members don&#8217;t need to file a claim or provide proof of purchase to receive a pro-rated portion of the settlement.\u00a0Users with active Google Play accounts will receive their funds directly and others will be paid via the Zelle or PayPal associated with their Google Play account.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re unsure whether you&#8217;re in the settlement class, you can visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playstoresubscriptionsettlement.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PlayStoreSubscriptionSettlement.com<\/a>, email <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/select\/google-play-5-million-class-action-settlement\/mailto:Admin@PlayStoreSubscriptionSettlement.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Admin@PlayStoreSubscriptionSettlement.com<\/a> or call 833-419-4495. <\/p>\n<p>You can also send questions to the Settlement Administrator:<\/p>\n<p>Uzair, et al. v. Details about objecting to the settlement can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.playstoresubscriptionsettlement.com\/frequently-asked-questions.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline2\"\/>How much money can I get from the Google Play settlement?<\/p>\n<p>While the settlement agreement is for $5 million, the amount individual class members will receive will be determined after service awards are allocated to named plaintiffs and attorney fees are paid. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s estimated, however, that each participating class member will receive approximately $5.85.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline3\"\/>When will Google send out payments?<\/p>\n<p>A final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled in California Superior Court on July 23, 2026. If the settlement is finalized and there are no further appeals, payments should be received approximately 60 to 90 days after that date.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other Google settlements<\/p>\n<p>A court granted preliminary approval for a\u00a0$700 million settlement after Google was accused of operating a monopoly in app distribution and payment processing. Android users who made a purchase in the Google Play Store between Aug. 16, 2016, and Sept. 30, 2023, are eligible for payments, which should go out after a final hearing on April 30, 2026. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.googleplaystateagantitrustlitigation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>Click here<\/strong><\/a><strong> for more information.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Google also agreed to a $135 million settlement to resolve claims it used Android devices to transfer data to Google without users&#8217; permission.
