{"id":462197,"date":"2026-04-30T22:51:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T22:51:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/462197\/"},"modified":"2026-04-30T22:51:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T22:51:14","slug":"all-largely-civil-on-the-campaign-trail-as-councillors-hope-to-win-dublin-central-td-seat-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/462197\/","title":{"rendered":"All largely civil on the campaign trail as councillors hope to win Dublin Central TD seat \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Daniel Ennis was walking a group of  children back from a training session  at his football club, East Wall Bessborough, in late 2022 when they passed a protest outside a proposed accommodation centre for asylum seekers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As they passed, protesters saw the group and started hurling abuse at the children, some of whom were from different ethnic backgrounds. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSome of the language that was thrown at the kids, aged from six to nine, was horrible and will live with me forever,\u201d Ennis says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A former League of Ireland soccer player, Ennis (37) put all his efforts into the north inner city club, developing players and encouraging at-risk teenagers from different backgrounds to put their energies into sport. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But this was a critical moment for him. \u201cI saw some of those actors who were the main drivers of the protest putting themselves forward to represent our community in the local elections. I had no family background in politics. It was then I decided I would jump forward because we needed positive leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">And so he stood and was elected a councillor for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/social-democrats\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/social-democrats\/\">Social Democrats<\/a> in 2024.  Today he is standing on the junction of Manor Street and Aughrim Street in Dublin 7 as the party\u2019s candidate in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-central-constituency\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-central-constituency\/\">Dublin Central<\/a> byelection. A tall, imposing man with a shaved head, authentic backstory and easy manner, it is easy to see why Ennis is regarded as one of the favourites to take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/paschal-donohoe\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/paschal-donohoe\/\">Paschal Donohoe<\/a>\u2019s old seat. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There\u2019s a group of about a dozen with him as they move into trendy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/stoneybatter\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/stoneybatter\/\">Stoneybatter<\/a>, which would be a natural vote magnet for the SocDems. There\u2019s still grittiness there; Ennis  says antisocial behaviour does  occur.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As we pass along the rows of pretty cottages, there are one or two refuseniks who won\u2019t engage. Photograph: Tom Honan for The Irish Times. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">That said, Ennis gets a generally positive reception, although it\u2019s clear a lot are not up to the pitch of the campaign yet. Siobh\u00e1n Killeen is holding her dog Billy and speaks pleasantly to Ennis for five minutes at her doorstep. \u201cIt\u2019s a great area but there are some problems,\u201d she says. \u201cLitter is one, and some antisocial behaviour. We have scooters all the time.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/04\/29\/gerry-hutch-officially-listed-as-candidate-for-dublin-central-byelection\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gerry Hutch officially listed as candidate for Dublin Central byelectionOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ennis identifies the big issues as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cost-of-living\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cost-of-living\/\">cost of living<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/childcare\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/childcare\/\">childcare<\/a> and  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/housing-crisis\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/housing-crisis\/\">housing affordability<\/a> in particular. \u201cA lot of people are not able to live in the community that they grew up in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">We meet S\u00e9amus at his doorway. He shows Ennis an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/immigration\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/immigration\/\">anti-immigrant<\/a> pamphlet he got from \u201ctwo lads\u201d who called around earlier. He said despite giving out about foreigners, neither could speak Irish. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ennis peruses the literature. \u201cThe message is rotten,\u201d he declares. \u201cThat\u2019s all I can tell you. That\u2019s why fighting hate is near the top of my list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI haven\u2019t quite decided which of the centre-left candidates I\u2019m going with yet,\u201d says S\u00e9amus. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Two kilometres away among the lovely redbrick houses of Botanic Road in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/glasnevin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/glasnevin\/\">Glasnevin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\/\">Fianna F\u00e1il<\/a>\u2019s John Stephens is flying from house to house. Like Ennis, he\u2019s a new councillor, having only been elected in 2024, but he is a veteran, another ground-up candidate rooted in his community. With grown up children, Stephens, with a broad open face and easy manner, has worked as an administrator in the Mater hospital for more than  30 years and is a grafter. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"John Stephens of Fianna F&#xE1;il talks with Marguerite Norris in Drumcondra, Dublin. Photograph: Tom Honan <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His big issues: he wants the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/help-to-buy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/help-to-buy\/\">Help to Buy<\/a> scheme threshold to be increased from \u20ac500,000 to \u20ac700,000; 24\/7 hospital services, particularly in radiology and diagnostics, and has called for more GPs. Early intervention in crime prevention also forms part of his platform. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In Iona Villas, Imelda O\u2019Reilly highlights the lack of Mild General Learning Disability classes and SNA support. In a calm, matter-of-fact way (that\u2019s nonetheless formidable), she talks about her 15-year-old daughter \u2013 who has an intellectual disability but no behavioural issues \u2013 and the difficulties she has in getting appropriate education. \u201cShe\u2019ll never go to college, and that\u2019s fine, but there should be an education path for her,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Stephens says he will talk to her again \u201cas it is a very private issue for yourself\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI\u2019m not private about it at all,\u201d replies O\u2019Reilly without pausing. \u201cShe\u2019s not getting the education she deserves, because it doesn\u2019t exist and it should exist, because she is one of many.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf you put me into Government, you can change that,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cYou are in Government,\u201d she replies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI\u2019m a councillor,\u201d he says. \u201cIf you put me in I\u2019ll be sitting at the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Around the corner, he bumps into Marguerite Norris and her two daughters, Ellie (12) and Ada (9) O\u2019Hora. You would imagine it was the same for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bertie-ahern\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bertie-ahern\/\">Bertie Ahern<\/a> when he was in his pomp. Stephens is a big admirer of Bertie, who has been helping him out. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, he\u2019s a Government candidate and does not have the record or profile of those two predecessors. That makes it difficult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMy whole energy is getting John Stephens elected,\u201d he contends. \u201cI want to be a listening voice and a strong representative for Dublin Central in the D\u00e1il.
