{"id":462254,"date":"2026-04-30T23:38:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T23:38:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/462254\/"},"modified":"2026-04-30T23:38:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T23:38:15","slug":"coillte-bord-na-mona-lands-to-be-handed-over-under-new-effort-to-tackle-abysmal-state-of-nature-in-ireland-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/462254\/","title":{"rendered":"Coillte, Bord na M\u00f3na lands to be handed over under new effort to tackle \u2018abysmal\u2019 state of nature in Ireland \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The transfer of lands from semi-State companies to the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is to form part of the Government\u2019s response to the \u201cabysmal\u201d state of nature in Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister of State for Nature Christopher O\u2019Sullivan said talks would begin with forestry company Coillte and energy firm Bord na M\u00f3na about moving some of their estates to NPWS management for nature restoration. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It comes as he accepted a report from an independent advisory committee set up to make recommendations for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2026\/04\/28\/dedicated-nature-fund-needed-to-save-irelands-remaining-wildlife-advisory-body-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2026\/04\/28\/dedicated-nature-fund-needed-to-save-irelands-remaining-wildlife-advisory-body-says\/\">the country\u2019s first nature restoration plan<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt sets out some pretty stark realities. We know the state of nature is abysmal,\u201d he said of the report. \u201cThere is not much to be proud of.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A key recommendation from the committee is that nature restoration begin on State lands, including those held by Coillte, which owns 7 per cent of the Republic\u2019s land, and Bord na M\u00f3na, which has 1 per cent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The companies are the State\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2026\/04\/28\/dedicated-nature-fund-needed-to-save-irelands-remaining-wildlife-advisory-body-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2026\/04\/28\/dedicated-nature-fund-needed-to-save-irelands-remaining-wildlife-advisory-body-says\/\">largest public landowners<\/a>, but they have commercial mandates, meaning they must use their lands primarily for business and profit \u2013 Coillte for timber and Bord na M\u00f3na, previously for peat but now for wind farms. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Sullivan said rather than change their mandates, land could be acquired from them. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said while both companies had some nature restoration projects, and Coillte adopted a mission statement in recent years to prioritise nature on 30 per cent of its estate, the NPWS was better placed to act as a nature restoration agency. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWithin NPWS, we have the expertise, the ecologists, the rangers on the ground who are experts at managing land for nature,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said discussions on land acquisition needed to happen \u201cso that we can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2026\/04\/28\/dedicated-nature-fund-needed-to-save-irelands-remaining-wildlife-advisory-body-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2026\/04\/28\/dedicated-nature-fund-needed-to-save-irelands-remaining-wildlife-advisory-body-says\/\">get on with what we\u2019re really good at<\/a>, and that\u2019s restoring nature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He added that Coillte \u201ccan get on with what they\u2019re good at and that\u2019s the commercial element of providing timber\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement Coillte said it welcomed today\u2019s report: \u201dWe engaged with the chair of the Independent Advisory Committee as part of their consultation process, and we will continue to engage with key stakeholders to support the development of Ireland Nature Restoration Plan going forward.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Bord na M\u00f3na meanwhile said it \u201cnoted the publication of the Independent Advisory Committee on Nature Restoration report and its recommendations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cDecisions regarding BnM\u2019s statutory mandate are a matter for Government, our Minister and the Oireachtas,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">All EU member states must produce nature restoration plans as part of a move to restore 20 per cent of degraded land, river and sea habitats to health by 2030, and all of them by 2050.
