As a child he acted alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cate-blanchett\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cate-blanchett\/\">Cate Blanchett<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/colin-farrell\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/colin-farrell\/\">Colin Farrell<\/a> and Brenda Fricker in the film about murdered journalist Veronica Guerin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Driscoll played Guerin\u2019s son, Cathal, but it was not an insight gleaned from the film into the illegal drug trade that pushed him towards a career in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\">An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"New garda Simon O'Driscoll, 30, from Dublin, is a former actor who appeared in Fair City. Photograph: Hugh Dooley <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI had family in the job and saw how much they loved it,\u201d he said, adding that their positive experiences was a guiding factor in his decision to join up. He also wanted a job that \u201chas a bit more meaning on a day-to-day basis\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Driscoll also appeared in New Boy, the Oscar-nominated film based on a short story by Roddy Doyle, and for a number of years on soap opera Fair City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He will be going back to the capital as a garda and is set to be stationed at Kevin Street station. \u201cI expect to be busy, that\u2019s for sure, but that is what I want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Donegal native Ciara Kearns (42) is bound for Letterkenny Garda station now she has graduated. Kearns said \u201cit takes a village\u201d to train a garda and part of that village was her mother, who looked after her teenage son while she was in training. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe\u2019s well proud,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Newly qualified garda Ciara Kearns, 42, has represented Ireland in athletics. Photograph: Hugh Dooley <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Kearns has a \u201cdiverse\u201d background, having worked in psychology and athletics, and hopes she can bring those qualifications to some day work in the Divisional Protective Services Units (DPSUs), which deal with crimes against vulnerable victims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She has represented Ireland in athletics, first as a juvenile, and most recently won a gold medal in the long jump at the European Masters Championships in 2022. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Katelynn Doran (26) has played for the Leinster Women\u2019s Rugby team and laughed when asked if that background might help her to tackle crime.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Newly-qualified garda Katelynn Doran, 26, has played for the Leinster Women's Rugby team. Photograph: Hugh Dooley <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt made me physically tough,\u201d she said of her sporting life. \u201cThe bond you have with a team would be the very same as with your unit.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Doran studied law at Maynooth University before completing a master\u2019s degree in criminology, while playing for Leinster on the side.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A good garda, she said, is someone who is open-minded and \u201cthe friendly face\u201d that people can approach on the street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The cohort of 134 men and 59 women attested at the ceremony  will be assigned to Garda divisions across the country, with the majority, 141, headed to the Dublin metropolitan region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Their training lasted 36 weeks, with 24 of these spent in Templemore itself and 12 on placement.
