A 14-year-old unearthed a supernova by combing through space survey images. A backyard astronomer discovered 17 comets \u2013 including two with an old DSLR.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing quite illustrates the power of a camera \u2013 new or old \u2013 like astrophotography.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, I watched in amazement as A<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/photography\/astrophotography\/one-moon-32-cameras-10-000-photos-as-a-photographer-im-awed-by-the-artemis-ii-photo-album-these-are-the-best-ones-so-far\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/photography\/astrophotography\/one-moon-32-cameras-10-000-photos-as-a-photographer-im-awed-by-the-artemis-ii-photo-album-these-are-the-best-ones-so-far\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/photography\/astrophotography\/one-moon-32-cameras-10-000-photos-as-a-photographer-im-awed-by-the-artemis-ii-photo-album-these-are-the-best-ones-so-far\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rtemis II sent back the first human-photographed images of space<\/a> taken outside Earth\u2019s orbit in decades. That\u2019s how powerful and impactful the camera is.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0bb154ce-bc78-4b7b-be6c-de67b835d8e7-1\">But cameras don\u2019t even need to be the latest flagship models to be powerful. Artemis II <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/cameras\/dslr-cameras\/nasa-chose-an-old-dslr-as-its-primary-artemis-ii-camera-heres-why\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/cameras\/dslr-cameras\/nasa-chose-an-old-dslr-as-its-primary-artemis-ii-camera-heres-why\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/cameras\/dslr-cameras\/nasa-chose-an-old-dslr-as-its-primary-artemis-ii-camera-heres-why\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">used a decade-old DLSR<\/a>, an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/photography\/astrophotography\/yes-artemis-ii-astronauts-are-using-a-decade-old-dslr-but-the-gopros-attached-to-orion-are-even-older-these-artemis-ii-images-were-shot-with-a-2014-action-camera\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/photography\/astrophotography\/yes-artemis-ii-astronauts-are-using-a-decade-old-dslr-but-the-gopros-attached-to-orion-are-even-older-these-artemis-ii-images-were-shot-with-a-2014-action-camera\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/photography\/astrophotography\/yes-artemis-ii-astronauts-are-using-a-decade-old-dslr-but-the-gopros-attached-to-orion-are-even-older-these-artemis-ii-images-were-shot-with-a-2014-action-camera\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">old GoPro<\/a>, and a modern mirrorless <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/reviews\/nikon-z9-review\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/reviews\/nikon-z9-review\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/reviews\/nikon-z9-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nikon Z9<\/a> that I could buy and use in my own backyard if I wanted to.<\/p>\n<p>The Artemis II images had me wondering, what else have cameras helped discover, even without ever leaving Earth\u2019s atmosphere? <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/amateur-astronomer-galaxies-name-donatiello\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/amateur-astronomer-galaxies-name-donatiello\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Giuseppe Donatiello<\/a>, an amateur astronomer, discovered five new galaxies \u2013 using a 2MP CCD camera sensor with a homemade telescope.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/13957-doomed-sungrazing-comet-terry-lovejoy-interview.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/13957-doomed-sungrazing-comet-terry-lovejoy-interview.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Terry Lovejoy<\/a> is a backyard astronomer who has now discovered 17 comets. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.celestron.com\/blogs\/news\/chasing-comets-how-terry-lovejoy-became-a-legendary-comet-hunter?srsltid=AfmBOopmeAdXzvqN9td9Bve1Kg6508_K83VWXuBo3YQKuQkG7Wwg58Xm\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.celestron.com\/blogs\/news\/chasing-comets-how-terry-lovejoy-became-a-legendary-comet-hunter?srsltid=AfmBOopmeAdXzvqN9td9Bve1Kg6508_K83VWXuBo3YQKuQkG7Wwg58Xm\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">His first two<\/a>? She discovered the surprisingly dim supernova using images from the Puckett Observatory Supernova Search before locating it with her astrophotographer father\u2019s backyard telescope.<\/p>\n<p>The camera isn\u2019t just a tool for exploring space. There\u2019s something about the night sky that eases the tension in my shoulders and makes the stress of the day seem inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t name much beyond the Big Dipper and Polaris, but I can stand in awe of the universe just the same. As my favorite science fiction alien, Rocky from Hail Mary, would say, photographing the stars makes me feel \u201cAmaze! Amaze!
