Podcaster Joe Rogan on Friday ripped the \u201cridiculous\u201d backlash<\/a> against late-night host Jimmy Kimmel for a joke he made days before a gunman attempted to target<\/a> President Trump and other officials at the White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) dinner last weekend.<\/p>\n

Kimmel held a mock roast on his show last week, during which he joked that first lady Melania Trump had the \u201cglow\u201d of \u201can expectant widow.\u201d Rogan argued that \u201cnobody gave a s\u2014t\u201d about the joke until after the shooting incident later that Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one cared on Saturday until Saturday night when the assassination attempt, and then all the sudden, everyone\u2019s blaming Kimmel,\u201d he said during a episode of the \u201cJoe Rogan Experience<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first lady accused Kimmel<\/a> on Monday of spouting \u201chateful and violent rhetoric\u201d to \u201cdivide our country\u201d and called on ABC to \u201ctake a stand\u201d and pull him off the air. The president also renewed calls<\/a> for the late-night host to be fired, describing the quip as \u201cvery shocking\u201d and suggesting it was meant to incite violence.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was there for a very obvious and sinister reason,\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social<\/a>, referencing the alleged gunman, 31-year-old Cole Allen<\/a>, who is charged with attempting to assassinate<\/a> the president.<\/p>\n

\u201cI appreciate that so many people are incensed by Kimmel\u2019s despicable call to violence, and normally would not be responsive to anything that he said but, this is something far beyond the pale,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Kimmel defended himself<\/a> several times on the show this week, initially clarifying on Monday that the joke was a \u201cvery light\u201d nod to the Trumps\u2019 age difference. The president is 79 and the first lady is 56.<\/p>\n

He circled back to the joke<\/a> on Tuesday after playing a clip of the Trumps meeting with<\/a> King Charles III and Queen Camilla at the White House, when the president apologized to his wife of 21 years that they would not be able to match his parents\u2019 63-year marriage.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy god, he should be fired for that,\u201d Kimmel reacted on Tuesday. \u201cOnly Donald Trump would demand I be fired for making a joke about his old age, and then a day later, go out and make a joke about his own old age.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) earlier this week ordered an early review<\/a> of the broadcast licenses of several local television stations owned and operated by Disney, the parent company that owns ABC, where Kimmel\u2019s show is hosted.<\/p>\n

The FCC, under Chairman Brendan Carr, has faced criticism<\/a> for its purported attempts to crack down on media content<\/a> deemed critical of Trump through threats to revoke broadcast licenses<\/a> and other regulatory pressure. Carr said the latest decision was not prompted<\/a> by White House pressure.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Anna M. Gomez, a Democrat, panned Tuesday\u2019s decision<\/a> as \u201cthe most egregious action this FCC has taken in violation of the First Amendment to date.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs part of its ongoing campaign of censorship and control, the White House called publicly for the silencing of a vocal critic, and this FCC has now answered that call,\u201d Gomez said in a statement. \u201cThis is an unprecedented and politically motivated attempt to interfere with how broadcasters operate, and this unlawful overreach will fail.\u201d<\/p>\n
