Austrian police said on Saturday \u200cthey had arrested a 39-year-old suspect in connection with a case in \u200cwhich rat poison was placed in jars of baby food in what \u200btheir German manufacturer called an attempt to extort it.<\/p>\n

Five \u201cmanipulated\u201d jars of the same kind of baby food made by German brand HiPP \u200bwere safely recovered last month in Austria<\/a>, the Czech Republic<\/a> and Slovakia<\/a> \u2060before they could be consumed, German police said at \u200cthe \u200ctime. \u200b<\/p>\n

A sixth jar thought to have been in Austria has still not been found.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday \u2060we succeeded in \u200barresting a suspect, 39-year-old man,\u201d said a \u200bspokesperson for police in the eastern state of Burgenland, \u200cwhere a poisoned jar was \u200bfound.<\/p>\n

Officers declined to provide further details for fear they \u2060could jeopardise the investigation.<\/p>\n

Earlier on \u2060Saturday, \u200btabloid newspaper Kronen Zeitung said the man had been arrested in the state of Salzburg, which borders Germany<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While HiPP did not elaborate on the nature of the extortion, Austrian newspaper Die Presse reported soon after the case came to light that an \u200cemail was sent \u2060to HiPP in March demanding \u20ac2 million within six days, but the company did not \u200cnotice it until two weeks after that deadline.<\/p>\n
