{"id":46835,"date":"2025-09-06T06:59:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-06T06:59:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/46835\/"},"modified":"2025-09-06T06:59:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-06T06:59:07","slug":"national-orthopaedic-hospital-staff-seek-boycott-of-israeli-companys-medicines-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/46835\/","title":{"rendered":"National Orthopaedic Hospital staff seek boycott of Israeli company\u2019s medicines \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">More than 100 staff members at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cappagh-national-orthopaedic-hospital\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cappagh-national-orthopaedic-hospital\/\">National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh<\/a> have rowed in behind a proposed boycott of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/teva-pharmaceuticals\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/teva-pharmaceuticals\/\">Teva Pharmaceuticals<\/a>, an Israeli company. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A letter signed by 104 workers at the Cappagh hospital in Finglas sent a letter to its chief executive Angela Lee this week asking to \u201cdiscontinue the procurement and use\u201d of the generic drug manufacturer where viable alternatives exist. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">It comes after more than 50 consultants at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/children-s-health-ireland-chi-at-crumlin\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Children\u2019s Health Ireland<\/a> (CHI) first made a similar call last month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Responding to the letter, Ms Lee said the hospital was \u201cin the process of reviewing and considering\u201d the petition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Teva Pharmaceuticals, an Israeli multinational, is one of the world\u2019s largest manufacturers of generic and specialist drugs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The company, which makes Sudocrem, has a big presence in Ireland and is one of the largest suppliers of generic medicines to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hse\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HSE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Teva said any boycott of its medicine could \u201cimpose a risk on the health and wellbeing\u201d of patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">In a letter to Ms Lee this week, the group said it represented doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, administrative staff, porters, cleaners and caterers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The language used in the letter was almost identical to the letter from CHI staff. It is understood a similar action is being considered at acute adult hospitals across the country. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2025\/08\/23\/more-than-50-consultants-urge-state-to-stop-using-israeli-medicines-where-viable-alternatives-exist\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Over 50 consultants urge State to stop using Israeli medicines \u2018if viable alternatives\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Both letters argued that taxes paid by Teva to the Israeli government \u201cdirectly funds the diplomatic and military resources employed by the Israeli government to carry out a genocide and silence dissent domestically and internationally\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cThe company provides Israeli forces with medical supplies and donations.
