\"Former Former Mumbai Police officer MN Singh has revisited one of the most controversial chapters of the 1993 Mumbai blasts<\/a> investigation \u2014 the arrest of Sanjay Dutt<\/a> \u2014 recalling the pressure, politics and legal complexities surrounding the case.Speaking to Hussain Zaidi on his YouTube channel, Singh said the case stood out because \u201cbefore this, no film star had been arrested. It was the first time,\u201d adding that the situation came with \u201cso much pressure,\u201d including from the actor\u2019s MP father Sunil Dutt<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u2018He admitted… but said it was a mistake\u2019<\/p>\n

Singh revealed that the investigation pointed to Dutt procuring weapons during the 1993 riots, allegedly sourced via underworld operatives linked to Dawood Ibrahim and delivered by Abu Salem on instructions from Anees Ibrahim.\u201cWhen it came out in our investigation that Sanjay Dutt had taken weapons, it shocked everyone \u2014 even us,\u201d Singh said.He added that Dutt admitted to possession during questioning: \u201cHe said, \u2018Sahab maine liya, lekin galti ho gayi.\u2019\u201dThe actor had reportedly cited threats during the riots as the reason for acquiring the weapons \u2014 a claim that has also been part of public record over the years.However, Singh pointed out that Dutt already had licensed weapons and police protection. \u201cThese were not for safety,\u201d he said, noting the cache included \u201cAK-56 rifles, ammunition and hand grenades.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018What could I do? He was a star, so let him go?\u2019<\/p>\n

Despite the shock factor, Singh maintained that the law had to take its course. \u201cWhat could I do? Should I have let him go because he was a star? That was not possible,\u201d he said.He also recalled repeated appeals from Sunil Dutt. \u201cHe would meet me and say, \u2018Singh saab, bachaiye mera ladka… galti kar diya,\u2019\u201d Singh shared, adding that the scale of the case made it impossible to suppress.<\/p>\n

The case: From TADA charges to Arms Act conviction<\/p>\n

For context, Sanjay Dutt was initially arrested in 1993 under both the TADA and Arms Act in connection with weapons linked to the Mumbai blasts.While he was later cleared of terror charges, he was convicted under the Arms Act for illegal possession of weapons \u2014 including an AK-56 rifle \u2014 and eventually sentenced to five years in prison by the Supreme Court. <\/p>\n

\u2018Those who gave weapons were convicted under TADA…\u2019<\/p>\n

Without directly criticising the judiciary, Singh hinted at his dissatisfaction with the outcome. \u201cWe had registered the case under TADA… charges were framed, trial had begun,\u201d he said.He pointed out that several others involved \u2014 including those who delivered the weapons \u2014 were convicted under TADA. \u201cThose who gave the weapons were punished under TADA… the one who took them was not,\u201d he remarked, adding, \u201cI don\u2019t want to comment further.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u2018Pressure was there, but I didn\u2019t bend\u2019<\/p>\n

Singh also revealed that multiple officials \u2014 including police and customs officers \u2014 were booked in the case, and that pressure came from \u201ctop to bottom.\u201d\u201cAs an officer, it was my duty.
