{"id":469152,"date":"2026-05-05T07:23:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T07:23:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/469152\/"},"modified":"2026-05-05T07:23:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T07:23:12","slug":"christopher-nolan-the-odyssey-author-homer-was-the-marvel-of-its-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/469152\/","title":{"rendered":"Christopher Nolan: The Odyssey Author Homer Was the Marvel of Its Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/the-odyssey\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-odyssey\" data-tag=\"the-odyssey\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Odyssey<\/a>\u201d director <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/christopher-nolan\/\" id=\"auto-tag_christopher-nolan\" data-tag=\"christopher-nolan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christopher Nolan<\/a> joined Stephen Colbert on Monday night\u2019s episode of \u201cThe Late Show.\u201d During his interview, he discussed working with Tom Holland and watching Anne Hathaway in \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2.\u201d He also likened Homer, the original author of \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d to the MCU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile discussing \u201cSpider-Man\u201d star Holland, who plays Odysseus\u2019 son Telemachus in \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d Nolan said he\u2019s probably among the last filmmakers in Hollywood to fully realize his skills as an actor. But now that they\u2019ve filmed together, Nolan said he would be more than happy to get Holland on another project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cHe\u2019s amazing,\u201d Nolan said. \u201cI\u2019ve not worked with him before, but I would love to work with him again. I mean, he\u2019s just an incredible talent. He\u2019s so, so great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHathaway, who starred in \u201cInterstellar\u201d and \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises,\u201d reunites with Nolan for \u201cThe Odyssey.\u201d She plays Penelope, Odysseus\u2019 wife and the queen of Ithaca. When asked if he had seen Hathaway\u2019s latest film, \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2,\u201d Nolan said, \u201cI watched it last night. It was fabulous. Wth Emily Blunt as well. Terrific.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLater in the interview, Colbert pointed out that Holland, Hathaway and their \u201cOdyssey\u201d co-star Robert Pattinson have all acted in major superhero blockbusters, which prompted Nolan to draw parallels between the ancient Greek epic and modern comicbook franchises. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cEven comic book culture, whether you\u2019re talking about Marvel or D.C. or all the rest, a lot of it comes directly from the Homeric Epics,\u201d Nolan said. \u201cThe thing about Homer is, nobody knows if that was a person. Homer, in a way, is the sort of George Lucas of his time.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe later added, \u201cThe thing about Homer, it is the Marvel of its day. It\u2019s very directly this desire for us to feel or believe gods could walk amongst us, and I think the modern comic book is kind of our expression of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Odyssey\u201d is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated blockbusters of the 2026 summer season. The film\u2019s cast list reads like a who\u2019s who of Hollywood\u2019s biggest and most bankable A-listers. Matt Damon leads as the Greek hero Odysseus. Outside of Holland, Hathaway and Pattinson, his co-stars include Zendaya, Mia Goth, Jon Bernthal, Lupita Nyong\u2019o, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page and Benny Safdie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNolan\u2019s last film, \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d was released to similar levels of hype on July 21, 2023. The \u201cInception\u201d filmmaker recently told the Associated Press that, although \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d is still \u201can epic film,\u201d its run time is clocking in below his biopic about the father of the atomic bomb, which ran for three hours. He also told AP that there is a \u201cmassive amount of pressure\u201d in adapting such a well-known story like \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d but assured the outlet that he \u201creally tried to make the best film possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAnyone taking on \u2018The Odyssey\u2019 is taking on the hopes and dreams of people for epic movies everywhere and that comes with a huge responsibility,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/news\/christoper-nolan-odyssey-runtime-shorter-oppenheimer-1236733382\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">he said<\/a>. \u201cWhat I learned from [making \u2018The Dark Knight\u2019 trilogy] is that what people want from a movie about a beloved story, a beloved set of characters, is they want a strong and sincere interpretation.
