{"id":469284,"date":"2026-05-05T09:27:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T09:27:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/469284\/"},"modified":"2026-05-05T09:27:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T09:27:14","slug":"it-makes-no-sense-parents-devastated-by-proposed-sna-cuts-in-schools-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/469284\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018It makes no sense\u2019: Parents devastated by proposed SNA cuts in schools \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Criticism of policy around the allocation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/special-needs-assistants\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/special-needs-assistants\/\">special needs assistants<\/a> (SNAs) to schools has argued that children did not exist in rigid categories and supports should not be taken away simply because \u201ca child does not fit a narrow classification\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A number of parents expressed frustration at recent plans to remove SNAs, saying the decisions often made no sense, were not in keeping with the experience of the school, or would cause damage. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A controversial review of allocations was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/02\/17\/minister-halts-controversial-review-of-special-needs-assistants-allocations\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/02\/17\/minister-halts-controversial-review-of-special-needs-assistants-allocations\/\">paused by the Government in February<\/a> after pushback from parents, teachers and unions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2026\/02\/21\/heres-what-the-rapid-u-turn-on-special-needs-assistants-tells-us-about-this-government\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2026\/02\/21\/heres-what-the-rapid-u-turn-on-special-needs-assistants-tells-us-about-this-government\/\">The U-turn<\/a>  came after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-council-for-special-education\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-council-for-special-education\/\">National Council for Special Education (NCSE)<\/a> contacted almost 200 schools indicating their allocations were being reduced. A new circular providing a \u201cdetailed description of the range of duties and responsibilities of the evolved SNA role\u201d is now expected to be published before the end of June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In advance of the reversal, many parents contacted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-education\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-education\/\">Department of Education<\/a> pleading for the decision to be reversed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/education\/2026\/02\/25\/special-needs-assistants-protest-outside-leinster-house-demanding-job-security\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Special-needs assistants protest outside Leinster House demanding \u2018job security\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In one message, sent to  Minister for Education <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hildegarde-naughton\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hildegarde-naughton\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hildegarde Naughton<\/a>, a parent said the planned removal of an SNA was \u201cdevastating\u201d.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The parent said a review carried out by the NSCE in May 2025 \u201cguaranteed that the school would maintain its three posts\u201d. Due to increased enrolment numbers the following September, the school applied for a second review to \u201csecure further hours\u201d. This review was carried out last November and resulted in the school losing one of its SNAs, rather than gaining more support, according to the letter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe removal of an SNA from our school makes absolutely no sense,\u201d the person wrote. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In another email to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/michael-moynihan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/michael-moynihan\/\">Michael Moynihan<\/a>, Minister of State with Responsibility for Special Education, a parent said it was \u201cdeeply distressing\u201d that their child\u2019s school would lose two mainstream SNA posts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhile I understand that SNA reviews are intended to ensure resources are allocated appropriately, the outcome of this particular review does not reflect the lived reality of the children in the classroom,\u201d the email said. <\/p>\n<p>Special needs assistants, parents and children protest at Leinster House in February 2026, demanding clarity from the Government. Video: Bryan O&#8217;Brien <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMy child continues to have significant behavioural and emotional needs that affect their ability to fully participate in the school day without adequate support. The removal of mainstream SNA support will undoubtedly place additional strain on both my child and school staff, and it risks undermining the progress my child has worked so hard to achieve to date in their school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The parent said it was \u201cparticularly concerning\u201d that SNA support appeared to \u201conly\u201d be assigned to children with \u201ctoileting needs, acute medical conditions or profound physical disabilities\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis approach fails to recognise the genuine and ongoing care needs of many children in mainstream settings whose needs may not meet [this] threshold, but nonetheless require consistent SNA support to access education safely and meaningfully. Children\u2019s needs do not exist in rigid categories, and support should not be withdrawn simply because a child does not fit a narrow classification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Another parent said their child\u2019s school was set to lose the equivalent of almost four SNA posts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAs a parent of a non\u2011verbal autistic child, I have seen first-hand how essential SNA support is in helping children feel safe, understood, and confident in their learning environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The parent said the decision was \u201cparticularly difficult to understand\u201d after the Government had announced funding for 1,600 additional SNAs in Budget 2025. \u201cAt a time when national investment in special education is increasing, it is deeply troubling that our school is facing such a significant reduction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The emails were released via Freedom of Information. Replies sent to the parents confirmed the review was paused, pending further consideration.
