{"id":469758,"date":"2026-05-05T16:09:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T16:09:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/469758\/"},"modified":"2026-05-05T16:09:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T16:09:14","slug":"cork-passenger-tells-of-shock-at-deaths-on-cruise-ship-off-cape-verde","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/469758\/","title":{"rendered":"Cork passenger tells of shock at deaths on cruise ship off Cape Verde"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">An Irish woman on board a cruise ship at the centre of a deadly hantavirus outbreak has told of her shock at hearing of the deaths of fellow passengers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Author Ann Lane is one of two Irish women on board the MV Hondius, which is anchored off the coast of Cape Verde while health officials try to contain the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ms Lane, aged 80 from Millstreet, told  The Echo: \u201cOne morning the captain came to speak to us and he said that a man who hadn\u2019t been well had died in the night,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThey had no clue he had any sort of virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe were absolutely stunned but then it started to happen again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHis wife then died and that was pretty shocking and then someone from Northern Ireland began to be sick.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The deceased couple were Dutch nationals.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/5066835_1_articleinlinemobile_1517614472975.jpg\" alt=\"Ann Lane is one of two Irish women on board the MV Hondius.\" title=\"Ann Lane is one of two Irish women on board the MV Hondius.\" class=\"card-img\"\/>Ann Lane is one of two Irish women on board the MV Hondius.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Another passenger &#8211;
