{"id":47014,"date":"2025-09-06T09:10:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-06T09:10:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/47014\/"},"modified":"2025-09-06T09:10:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-06T09:10:13","slug":"drinks-sector-next-major-priority-for-eu-on-tariff-talks-says-tanaiste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/47014\/","title":{"rendered":"Drinks sector \u2018next major priority\u2019 for EU on tariff talks says T\u00e1naiste"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The drinks sector is the \u201cnext major area of priority\u201d for the European Union in tariff discussions with the US, T\u00e1naiste <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/maintopics\/simon-harris_topic-5075291.html\">Simon Harris<\/a>\u00a0has said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Harris said there was a \u201cgenuine expectation\u201d within the bloc that the sector would have received a carve-out from the sweeping 15% tariffs on most exports to the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Speaking to reporters on Friday, he said there had been a \u201creal sense of optimism\u201d that a deal would have been reached.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mr Harris said: \u201cWhen it comes to drinks, I feel there was almost an expectation that there was a potential carve out to be done, a deal that would make sense for both sides of the Atlantic Ocean\u00a0\u2014 and that didn\u2019t happen in the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He added: \u201cWe obviously got a different outcome. But I know from my engagement that the European Union has now identified the drinks sector as the next major area of priority<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cBut I also know \u2026 in every negotiation that nothing\u2019s agreed till everything\u2019s agreed and final detail. \u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">With the EU-US framework allowing for further discussions, Mr Harris said achieving a better agreement on drinks would be \u201ca big deal for Ireland\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mr Harris, who is also the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, said: \u201cThere\u2019s some space to have further conversations about other sectors and we in Ireland\u00a0\u2014 and in fairness, we in the European Union\u00a0\u2014 feel very strongly about the drink sector, the alcohol industry, being part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He said he had raised the matter with European Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic and US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">However, he cautioned: \u201cI\u2019m not expecting a breakthrough on the drink sector imminently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mr Harris said there are other issues which \u201cneed to be teased through\u201d, including the definition of \u201cgeneric pharma products\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThere\u2019s a big body of work that needs to be done in relation to that, because there\u2019s going to be up to a 15% tariff in general for pharma in the EU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cBut it does say that effectively, the current regime, ie a zero-for-zero, would maintain for generics. We don\u2019t yet have a list of what generics are, and medical devices are the same.
