{"id":470261,"date":"2026-05-05T23:00:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T23:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/470261\/"},"modified":"2026-05-05T23:00:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T23:00:10","slug":"jerry-seinfeld-larry-david-share-favorite-seinfeld-episodes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/470261\/","title":{"rendered":"Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David Share Favorite &#8216;Seinfeld&#8217; Episodes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/jerry-seinfeld\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jerry-seinfeld_1\" data-tag=\"jerry-seinfeld\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jerry Seinfeld<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/larry-david\/\" id=\"auto-tag_larry-david_1\" data-tag=\"larry-david\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Larry David<\/a> shared their favorite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/seinfeld\/\" id=\"auto-tag_seinfeld_1\" data-tag=\"seinfeld\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seinfeld<\/a> episodes and the backstories behind some of the show\u2019s most iconic moments during a live taping of\u00a0Ari Emanuel and Ben Persky\u2019s The Rushmore Podcast on Monday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe event, which was part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/netflix\/\" id=\"auto-tag_netflix_1\" data-tag=\"netflix\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Netflix<\/a> Is a Joke Festival, took place in front of a packed audience at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills that included Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos as well as Alan Horn, former head of Seinfeld producer Castle Rock Entertainment, and Warren Littlefield, former president of entertainment at NBC. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe evening began with Emanuel running through a brief history of the show, which famously struggled in its beginning. The idea for the series came about after David and Seinfeld met as stand-up comics. They\u2019d have conversations and began thinking, \u201cif we put this in a show, it\u2019d be hilarious,\u201d Seinfeld said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDavid shared that the show\u2019s first episode order beyond the pilot \u2014 a meager four episodes \u2014 was the \u201csmallest order in the history of television.\u201d The money for the series came out of the same budget that NBC used for variety specials. When Seinfeld received the four-episode order, it became someone\u2019s responsibility to tell Bob Hope he wouldn\u2019t be able to do a Christmas special that year, Seinfeld shared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Playbill for the event featured a \u201cresearch report\u201d that detailed audience\u2019s reaction of the pilot. Persky read aloud some notes from the memo, which noted that \u201cno segment of the audience was eager to watch the show again,\u201d while viewers called Jerry\u2019s life \u201cboring\u201d and George a \u201closer\u201d and said Jerry \u201cneeded a better backup ensemble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tEarly on, David and Seinfeld were told that the show wouldn\u2019t be getting picked up \u2014 \u201cand I was thrilled,\u201d David said, noting that he felt like he had \u201cno more stories left to tell,\u201d a feeling he also had \u201cafter every season of Seinfeld and every season of Curb Your Enthusiasm.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tEmanuel also reminded the crowd that the show kept shifting time slots before ultimately landing in the prime 9 p.m. Thursday period. \u201cCan we just say we had a rocky beginning and move on?\u201d Seinfeld quipped as Emanuel kept going through the show\u2019s early challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe duo also talked about the backstory of the character of Elaine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Elaine was not in the pilot, which did feature a waitress at the restaurant that the characters frequented. However, it was decided that they needed a different female character. \u201cWe were single guys,\u201d Seinfeld said. \u201cWe couldn\u2019t write relationships. We didn\u2019t know anything about it.\u201d David shared that he had dated Monica Yates, daughter of author Richard Yates, and they remained friends. So they based the character on her. \u201cIf it was an ex, it [eliminated the element of] \u2018will they or won\u2019t they?&#8217;\u201d Seinfeld noted.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/7T1A0348.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tFrom left: Ben Persky, Larry David, Jerry Seinfeld and Ariel Emanuel at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/netflix-is-a-joke\/\" id=\"auto-tag_netflix-is-a-joke_1\" data-tag=\"netflix-is-a-joke\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Netflix Is a Joke<\/a> Festival Presents: \u2018Rushmore Podcast Live\u2019 on May 4 at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAndrew Levy\/Netflix<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tEmanuel and Persky also asked about the origins of some of the show\u2019s biggest moments and catchprases that became part of the pop culture lexicon, including:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Close talker: <\/strong>\u201cThere are thousands of them; there are 200 in this audience right now,\u201d David joked.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Double dip:<\/strong> \u201cYou dip once, and you eat it,\u201d David deadpanned.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Soup Nazi: <\/strong>This idea came from writer Spike Feresten, who shared a story about a \u201chostile\u201d man selling soup in New York, and that became the basis of one of the series\u2019 most beloved episodes. \u201cPeople [around us] would just be talking and not realize they had a [storyline] for a show,\u201d David said.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In the vault: <\/strong>Seinfeld said his greatest regret is David not allowing him to work the phrase \u201cOy, the vault!\u201d (a play on \u201cOy, gevalt!\u201d) into an episode.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMeanwhile, each episode of The Rushmore Podcast sees Emanuel and Persky hosting various guests from the worlds of sports, entertainment and culture to debate the \u201cMount Rushmore\u201d (top four) of those categories. To that end, the quartet shared their picks for the top four episodes of Seinfeld, culled from 180 total episodes across nine seasons. Their choices, in no particular order:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Seinfeld:<\/strong> \u201cThe Contest,\u201d \u201cThe Soup Nazi,\u201d \u201cThe Merv Griffin Show,\u201d \u201cThe Marine Biologist\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>David:<\/strong> \u201cThe Contest,\u201d \u201cThe Opposite,\u201d \u201cThe Puffy Shirt,\u201d \u201cThe Pen\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Emanuel: <\/strong>\u201cThe Puffy Shirt,\u201d \u201cThe Boyfriend,\u201d \u201cThe Contest,\u201d \u201cThe Note\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Persky:<\/strong> \u201cThe Contest,\u201d \u201cThe Opposite,\u201d \u201cThe Boyfriend\u201d and \u201cThe Pitch\u201d\/\u201dThe Ticket\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDavid and Seinfeld shared some behind-the-scenes stories from some of those episodes.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u201cThe Contest\u201d<\/strong>: David had carried around this idea in a notebook for two years before pitching it, convinced no one would want to touch the storyline. He was \u201cshocked\u201d when Seinfeld told him he loved the idea. Later, David was so convinced that NBC wouldn\u2019t let them film this script that he was ready to quit on the spot once he got word. But that directive never came. However, \u201cafter the table read, the ad sales [team] went nuts,\u201d Littlefield shared from the audience. Still, the episode was filmed and aired and is widely considered one of the best of the entire series.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cThe Opposite\u201d<\/strong>: Seinfeld said this features one of his favorite lines from the show, when Jerry tells George (Jason Alexander): \u201cIf every instinct you have is wrong, then the opposite would have to be right.\u201d Quipped Seinfeld from the stage: \u201cIt\u2019s pure absurdity, and George was stupid enough to believe it.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cThe Puffy Shirt\u201d<\/strong>: David said he was out to dinner with a woman whom he couldn\u2019t hear well. Later, he started thinking: \u201cWhat if I had agreed to do something crazy?\u201d The shirt itself was inspired by a \u201cbillowy white shirt\u201d that David actually owned \u2014 and \u201cloved\u201d \u2014 at the time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cThe Boyfriend\u201d<\/strong>: Jerry\u2019s dialogue about the spit that MLB star Keith Hernandez (playing himself) may or may not have lobbed at Kramer (Michael Richards) \u2014 featuring a parody of the Zapruder film and the conspiracy theory that there was a second shooter in John F. Kennedy\u2019s assassination \u2014 was \u201cone of the biggest thrills of the series,\u201d Seinfeld said. \u201cIt was a long speech, and I knew it would get a lot of laughs if I got it right.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn the end, the quartet decided that the four best episodes are \u201cThe Contest,\u201d \u201cThe Opposite,\u201d \u201cThe Puffy Shirt\u201d and \u201cThe Marine Biologist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe night wrapped with an appearance by some super-fans who won a trivia contest and got to ask their own questions of David and Seinfeld.
