{"id":470835,"date":"2026-05-06T06:55:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T06:55:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/470835\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T06:55:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T06:55:17","slug":"veterans-boards-charlie-kaufmans-rebooted-later-the-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/470835\/","title":{"rendered":"Veterans Boards Charlie Kaufman&#8217;s Rebooted &#8216;Later The War&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<strong>EXCLUSIVE:<\/strong>\u00a0There is good news for Charlie Kaufman fans ahead of Cannes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/the-veterans\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-veterans\" data-tag=\"the-veterans\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Veterans<\/a>, the L.A.-based sales outfit headed by Vincent Maraval and Kim Fox, has announced it has boarded sales on his long-awaited comedy drama\u00a0Later The War.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe feature is set to shoot in Cyprus in 2027 with Channing Tatum, Tessa Thompson and Patsy Ferran leading the cast. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIt is Kaufman\u2019s fourth feature as a director after 2020 surrealist thriller\u00a0I\u2019m Thinking of Ending Things,\u00a0and his 12th feature screenplay after award-winning and nominated classics\u00a0including Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,\u00a0for which he shared an Academy Award with Michel Gondry and Pierre Bismuth, as well as Adaptation.\u00a0and Being John Malkovich.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tKaufman has adapted the script for his new film from the short story \u2018Debby\u2019s Dream House\u2019 by author Iddo Gefen, which feature in his short story collection \u2018Jerusalem Beach\u2019.\u00a0\u00a0The original story follows a man who manufactures dreams and nightmares for others, including for his own wife.<\/p>\n<p>In Kaufman\u2019s version, Tatum plays Peekman, a wildly popular actor-director, famous for blockbuster physical comedies in which he stars with his wife Kiki (Thompson). \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe more successful he becomes, the more he begins to suspect that deep down, he has nothing to say. In a bid for the artistic legitimacy that he craves, and as his marriage flounders, he attempts a serious Holocaust film, while Kiki moves on to create her own one-woman show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tWhen Peekman encounters Debora (Ferran), a poet who has no idea who he is, he finds himself desperate to win her approval. This does not go well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe film weaves present day reality, films nested within films, and mind-bending dreamscapes to create a world in which Peekman and Kiki, having lost themselves to the pursuit of fame, may find their way back to reality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tKen Kao and Josh Rosenbaum of Waypoint Entertainment (Project Hail Mary,\u00a0I Love Boosters, The Favourite) are producing together with Sarah Green (The Bikeriders,\u00a0Mud).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cIt is a genuine privilege to work with the visionary Charlie Kaufman.\u00a0Later The War\u00a0balances humor, irreverence, and wit with the kind of thought-provoking truth-telling Charlie is known for, all of which we need, right now,\u201d the producers said in a joint statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tTatum arrives on the project fresh from the critical success of Beth de Ara\u00fajo\u2019s Sundance Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic winner\u00a0Josephine\u00a0and Derek Cianfrance\u2019s hit crime caper\u00a0Roofman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThompson, who has also made name as a producer under the Viva Maude banner, was seen most recently in Nia DaCosta\u2019s feature\u00a0Hedda\u00a0as well as Netflix psychological thriller mini series\u00a0His &amp; Hers, on which she is also an executive producer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tFerran will soon be seen next in Joel Coen\u2019s gothic thriller\u00a0Jack of Spades\u00a0opposite Josh O\u2019Connor and Lesley Manville, with recent past credits including\u00a0Mickey 17\u00a0and Jay Kelly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe Veterans is handling international sales with CAA Media Finance looking after North America.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tKaufman is repped by CAA and Hansen Jacobson and Teller. Tatum is repped by CAA, Hansen Jacobson and Teller, and Relevant. Thompson is repped by CAA, Untitled, Jackoway Austen and Tyerman, and Shelter. Ferran is repped by UTA, Independent Talent Group, and Goodman, Genow and Schenkman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe Veterans is also in Cannes this year with James Gray\u2019s\u00a0Paper Tiger\u00a0in Competition Andy Garcia\u2019s\u00a0Diamond\u00a0premiering Out of Competition and Reed van Dyk\u2019s\u00a0Atonement\u00a0at Directors\u2019 Fortnight.
